I live in Kennewick, WA and according to the website, my home is an area where air quality is poor and highly polluted with an 8/10 for air factor. All other areas are below at a 4/10 or 1/10.

Looking at the models I was expecting our #1 risk to be wildfire. While we have a 15% chance of wildfire at our school in the next 30 years, a more pressing issue is the air quality from the wildfires in and around our area. I knew we had several days of bad air, but apparently we had 15 days where the air quality was too poor to go outside, and that number is expected to grow to 18 days annually in the next 30 years. Additionally Over the next 30 years, this property will experience 175.0% increase in the number of days with a heat index of 94ºF or more. 94ºF is the local "hot day" temperature for this area.

I live in Northern Okanogan County. We have seen a drastic increase in fire events in the last 10 years due to very dry conditions, reduction in annual rain fall and shorter spring/fall. The resource says that 99 % of properties in my zip code have a possibility of being effected by wildfire. Due to increased wildfire activity, we have lower air quality predictions for the next 3 decades. Most summers, there are months that we have to be aware of air quality, especially if you are already at risk. The heat factor is moderate, however in 2023-2024 we had winter temps at -27 F with wind chill and the following summer, temps topping 116 F. These drastic temps change they way we live on a daily basis!

Here on the East Hill of Kent, WA, where I live and work, we have moderate factor for floods (4/10). When I put an address down in the valley where many of my students live, the rating is severe. In both locations, the air quality is our greatest factor of 8/10. 98030 has worse air quality than 62% of ZIP codes in Washington. The site also states that the number of poor air quality days with an Air Quality Index (AQI) over 100 in 98030 will be higher in 30 years. The same is said for the location where a large portion of my students live.

Hello all! I love in West Richland, WA and according to the website, my area is at risk for:

1/10 floods

6/10 fire

1/10 wind (I don't believe this...we are very windy)

8/10 air

5/10 heat

It does get very windy here, very hot in the summer and we also have wild fire season here. I also love near the Hanford Site which can emit harsh toxic pollution in the area at times. We breath in worse air then others. We can have high winds up to 40m mph at times and that can damage homes, yards and also get things in your yard that are not yours lol

Unfortunately, often the power is not in the hands of people who are interested in learning or remembering connections with land and our responsibilities to it. We need more people in leadership that have a vested interest in making sure our time left on Earth is filled with quality connections between people and planet. Non-Indigenous peoples have a greater responsibility to read, learn and study historical relationships with land to create a connection that maybe hasn't been passed down for generations so that we can contribute in a positive way and teach others what we have learned.

I feel this chapter expanded my understanding of power, leadership, and stewardship when it comes to land. One thing I was able to take from the reading is rather than power being seen as control over others or resources, it reframes it as having responsibility to others and future generations. This shift in thinking persuades non-Indigenous leaders to try to consider how their own positions of privilege can be used to support, not dominate community efforts.

I am going to answer this a little differently because I am of the Mid-Island Metis Nation in BC (as my grandparents were forced off their traditional lands in Saskatchewan in the 1920s and their grandparents were shifted from their traditional lands in Manitoba in 1870s - forced and chosen migration has been a huge part of our live). I also teach many refugees who have traveled to Kent from many places in the world.

I connected with the quote/idea of being devoted to a place and working locally to preserve that place and that it will take "bold" decisions. My family has not lived in Manitoba for 155 years. That does not mean we are not connected to the land we currently live and thrive on. It means making new experiences and learning from the local peoples to expand our knowledge. I also need to examine my relationship to fossil fuels in particular as it relates to travel. Am I showing environmental stewardship if I fly 3-4 times a year?

This expanded my view of power, leadership, and environmental stewardship of how we should treat our lands and water ways. The responsibilities that non-Indigenous individuals is "how should we treat our land and water ways that Indigenous people have taken care of since time in memorial?" Also, non-Indigenous people also have the responsibility of "how do we bring the natural connection of the land and water ways into our own connection to nature and how do we help our community reestablish a connection to nature?"
