Coraline

In Coraline, the type of animation is stop motion. This means that when filming, each character had to be physically moved while the camera stopped and started along the way. This movie also has the element of realism and can make it seem that the story actually took place. Pathos is widely used within this story to make it come alive. The characters portray their emotions very well and the animation pulls everything together. The genre that this story is classified under is horror because of its dark appeal and some of its frightening characters.

Alice in Wonderland

In Alice in Wonderland, the type of animation that is being used is 2D animation. This means that everything in this film was hand-drawn and transferred to a computer to put to life. This film is full of adventure and portrays the characters and storyline excellently. The genre that this story is classified under is fantasy because of its fictional characters, the magic that is used, the use of imagination, and its rare setting.

Both

Coraline and Alice in Wonderland are both based on books and the films capture their stories nicely.

Both Alice and Coraline have symbols representing the same idea. An important factor regarding those two are the passage of time. Alice and Coraline have a symbol portraying this message. For Alice, a white rabbit indicates this because it was noticing how Alice didn't have much left in her childhood as she was getting older. For Coraline, sand was representing this by using sand when creating things. The difference with one another is that the white rabbit showed positivity and growth, while sand showed negativity in people.

Coraline

In Coraline, the beginning of this story starts off with Coraline and her family moving from Michigan to Oreogan. She moves into a place called the Pink Place. At the end of this film, Coraline is reunited with her real parents. Then, her parents and all of her neighbors are restoring the garden. Before the screen goes black you meet the grandmother that rented out the Pink Place to Coraline's family.

Tunnels

Tunnels represents an entering of a new journey that Coraline and Alice are about to begin. Both of their tunnels portrayed a new dimension where they can forget about reality and find their true self. With that, they focus on themselves and go through many different obstacles when entering the tunnel. For Coraline, a door was representing a tunnel. Coraline wasn't suppose to go to this side of her house, however something sparked an interest. Blue and purple lights were shining at Coraline as she opened the door. What Coraline thought would be a fun adventure turned out to be the opposite. With Alice, her tunnel was a rabbit hole close to a riverbank. From there as she entered it, it was a steep fall where Alice proceeded to enter a new dimension. From there, her pathway in the tunnel was to explore herself, realize who she is.

As I continue to grow, I realized a similar thing that I've done that can relate to Coraline's story. In the movie, Coraline proceeds to look behind the door, where it sparked a curiosity of trying new things. I can definitely relate to Coraline in this case. How you may ask, well its by the drive and passion of adventuring out to try something new. With Coraline, the blue and purple lights are what grasped her towards the door. Instead, for me I get grasped by people posting on social media. There are many places I would love to visit, from restaurants to traveling. Another connection I can make is an escape from reality. Coraline enters the door into another world to forget about her parents. For me, if I have something that is really bothering me, I would like to surround myself with people and things to do to forget about it.

After watching Coraline, I have made major connections to her experience and journey. One connection that I have made is being curious about the world just like her. She is always exploring whether reality or her dream world. This connects to me because I love to explore different things that our world offers. Another connection that I have made is the idea of wanting everything to be perfect. Coraline shows this by her wanting a life just the way she wants. This can be shown by her parents being more involved in her and their own lives. This connects to me because while playing field hockey I wanted the team to be perfect through skills and friendships. I soon began to realize that this was just not going to happen.
