I am tremendously fortunate to already be in a teaching position with my own classroom. I am currently in my first year of teaching. Therefore, there are many procedures that I have had in place since the first day of school or developed through the experience..

The Bell Does Not Release You, I Do

In my ninth-grade algebra classroom, students are not allowed to leave at the bell until I release them. To be released, students must have completed a few tasks:
•	Put up their binders on the shelves neatly
•	Put their calculators up with the covers on the correct way
•	Put away any materials used for the day
•	Be sitting in their desks at the bell
By doing this, students have a set of tasks that they know must be done to be released at the bell. This helps create more structure in the classroom. Especially in a ninth-grade classroom, students need structure. Also, getting up when the bell rings is disrespectful. This was explained to the students on the first day of school. This procedure has been working well. Every class looks in my direction once the bell rings and will not leave their chairs until I say they can go.

Cell Phones

One procedure that works well in my classroom is my cell phone procedure. Students are to check-in their cell phones to me at the beginning of class. Their cell phones are kept behind my desk in a numbered organizer. Students will receive a notecard with the corresponding number to the slot their phone is in. Students will be able to check their phone back out after they have completed the following requirements:
•	Students must have finished all required work for the day
•	Students must not be missing any assignments
•	Students must not have any failing grades on assignments or tests. If there are any failing grades, corrections will need to be completed
If a student chooses to not check-in their phone at the beginning of class, they will not be able to be on their phone during free time. If they choose to pull out their phone anyways, it will be taken up. This procedure is one that works very well in my classroom. Students see the cell phone policy as a reward to get their work done in my class.

My Classroom is Not the Place

One procedure that is strongly enforced in my class deals with language. Students are not allowed to use language that pertains to suicide or anything racial. Even if they are just jokes, they are not allowed. As I explained to my students, jokes and commented that are about suicide or considered racial can hurt others. They do not know what will and will not hurt others. Students have been warned that there are no warnings besides the one they received on the first day of school. If students break the procedure, they will be sent straight to the office with a discipline referral. This procedure has worked well in my class. Students are more aware of what they are saying around their classmates and myself.

Be Respectful When I am Talking

Dealing with ninth graders, talking is an issue. Over the first few weeks of class, I have found the procedure that works best in my classroom. When I am standing at the front of the classroom and students will not stop talking, I will just stop talking and wait. I do not raise my voice. I do not flash the lights. I simply stand quietly and wait. With doing this, students have realized that they need to stop talking so I can speak. I have explained to my students that if they want to talk, I will stop talking to be respectful to their conversations just like they should to me. With showing the example of being respectful, students see that respect is given and expected in return. This procedure is one that I am glad I implemented.

Negative Behavior

The procedure I use for repeated disruptive behavior follows different consequences for repeated offenses.
•	First offense – correct the behavior. Let the student know what they did wrong and what behavior is expected
•	Second offense – try to redirect the behavior to get the student back on track
•	Third offense – private conversation with the student in the hallway
•	Forth offense – phone call to the parent/guardian about the behavior
•	Fifth offense – sent to the office with a discipline referral
Giving students time to correct their behavior lets the teacher handle the behavior inside the classroom. However, some student behavior must go through the steps and end up in the office. So far, only one student has been sent to the office. After multiple attempts, he did not correct his behavior. However, after a meeting with the student, the assistant principal, and myself, the behavior has been corrected.

Being in my first year of teaching, I developed the procedures I have in place by speaking with other educators. I was given the opportunity to teach summer school this past summer with a few of my new coworkers. I took this time to ask questions and develop my procedures based on their experience in the classroom for my grade level.
