Hi. My name is Laura. Currently I am working as a teacher at Sekolah Ciputra, Surabaya, Indonesia. I teach grade 5 this year with 42 students because I am a shared teacher. This is my eighth year teaching in this school. My principal asked me to join this workshop so I have a high expectation to get new knowledge and I can apply it in my classroom.

As currently, we are running online learning, nothing much I can say about the class physical learning environment. But for sure as a teacher, I still have high expectations for learning and mutual respect even though it’s online learning. Making space: it’s something that each of us and everyone who has any role in education has had to do in the midst of this pandemic. So, both physically and mentally is exactly what we have been doing since last year (2020). If it’s an offline school, we use the classroom space to show and appreciate students’ work, visual thinking tools, etc., and since it’s online learning, I use digital platforms to help my students to share their thoughts and opinions. This is the example from last year (2020-2021): https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1qAqrlpFY20mO-uFxaKz-67lSeWkesed8P-Flxp0S3iQ/edit?usp=sharing. I tried to use Bitmoji Classroom last year https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1RyJb1ZQIoN9fOD9v794F7ksvLoIys2EZyf4rqTGrviI/edit?usp=sharing with some quotes in the morning to facilitate the growth mindset. One-day learning process example: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1tP_PXTvRzTdMEm-glg9YSGZMjpmnRYv5rv9QdQueDH0/edit?usp=sharing. Another one is I use breakout rooms to facilitate the students in learning, here’s the example: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LLtz-YVLrFAIBxom2kaydEUmipfiPONX7CosRLXUyYY/edit?usp=sharing. Another space is for SEL check as a process where the students are invited to stop, pause, explore and appreciate their emotions. I hope this empowers my students to view their emotions as assets. Here is the example: https://jamboard.google.com/d/1793aNuFrS_22WIfv6Q4mengS2Gc8zLligJOIjNoE-NU/edit?usp=sharing and wellness wheel jam https://jamboard.google.com/d/1IIZRxLxOGO0ZreHQ5FY09xbdzDUt63mnmppjt7K8BsM/edit?usp=sharing. I think those features above that I could say went very well and I am continuing this year.

The most challenging part is assessing academic honesty, besides motivating some students with low self-confidence and no support from their families, especially with this online learning. Oh, wait!! Another challenge is when our school decided to open the school back and have the students for the hybrid model of instructions, starting September 2021.

Wish us luck, please!
