Teacher Buy-in

Meaningful PD requires teacher involvement from the beginning. Papa (2017) said, “Adults need to participate: plan and evaluate their instruction. Experiential learning activities should be provided. Topics must be relevant to their jobs or personal life.” This is supported in the other resources we investigated as well. I have personally been to countless training sessions that were thrown together last minute and seemed to have no connection to my classroom, or my colleagues’ classrooms. In my experiences, many IT leaders have shown a lack of understanding of content teaching and just assume teachers need their product. They put the work of adapting software on the teachers’ shoulders. This often reduces or completely loses teacher buy-in.

Training opportunities and learning communities should continue after the initial training session. I have found lasting change when I continue to implement and learn alongside other teachers. The friendly atmosphere enables a questioning and risk taking environment that fuels growth. It is easier to get answers from the teacher next door than a stranger’s email. Continued collaboration also creates responsibility to another professional.

Adults are motivated to learn as they develop needs and interests that learning will satisfy. An adult’s (protégé’s) needs and interests are an appropriate starting point for mentoring.

Adult orientation to learning is life or work centered. The appropriate frameworks for organizing mentoring are life- or work-related situations rather than theoretical subjects.

Experience is the richest resource for adult learning. The approach for mentoring involves active participation in a planned series of experiences, the reflection of those experiences, and their application to work situations.

Adults have a deep need to be self-directing. The role of the mentor is to engage in a process of inquiry, reflection, and decision making with the protégé rather than transmit knowledge and then evaluate the protégé’s conformity to it.

Individual differences among adult learners vary with age, gender, culture, language, and experience. Mentoring must make optimum provisions for differences in style, time, setting, and pace of learning.
