The witch hunt was a search for those who have accused of witchcraft or a search of evidence for a witch accusation. Many, although mostly women, were accused of being witches, whether they actually showed suspicious behavior or simply were a scapegoat for an accusers own self-interest. People would often be falsely accused of being witches if they angered or annoyed someone, were blamed for another's actions or insecurities, or even just being envied by someone witches, people would accuse another to get rid of them. Some ways they had searched for evidence about someone being a witch was to tie them up or bound their arms and legs, and through them into the ocean; whether or not they sank would determine if they were a witch or not. Another way was to strip them of all clothes and look for "the mark of the devil."

The puritans were a religious group that sought to purify all actions. They wanted a pure religion, the way God wanted it. After being kicked out of several countries that traveled to what is now known as America, to start their own country surrounded by their religion. Puritans believed that from the day you were born, God had decided whether you were going to heaven or hell. Being chosen to go to heaven was called being given grace. They believed they were on a mission by God to create a theocracy or a government run by God.

The crucible allegorical play was first shown on January 22, 1953. It was written by Arthur Miller and told the story of the witch hunt in Salem. Arthur wrote it in response to The Committee of Un-American Activities, who black-listed people responsible for creating any material deemed 'Un-American' or communist. This event heavily impacted Miller, and saw the similarities in both situations. At the time of it's release, it bombed in terms of critic reviews, almost no one going to see it. However, today, Arthur Miller's play is one of his most frequently produced works.

As a theocracy(a government run by god), the church officials were the government officials. The Puritans did not like the government, state, or king telling the churches what to do. So the church and the state were not separated. There was the "City Upon A Hill Theory" the Puritans had, were they believed that their colony would create a utopia were God would be found in its works and scriptures. Therefore, the Puritans had a strong belief in education. They established schools in order to read the World of God, their first public school being Harvard, founded in 1635.

Witchcraft Hysteria

As believers of God, Puritans also believed in the Devil. They held a strong belief in the fact that any natural catastrophe, disease, or misfortune, were all signs to them that The Devil was an acting force in this world. Causes of such hysteria in the belief of witches was the belief that witches were workers of the devil, causing high panic and alert at the time. Not only that, but also stuff of foreign influence increased the hysteria. With no entertainment but reading the bible available, young ones found interest in the stories of black magic and voodoo, coming from a foreign women named Tituba. Accusations would fly, and admitting to them was common for survival, but for those who didn't, punishment and trials would be in order.
