When I was first moving out here to California we took the southern route across Arizona and New Mexico, and we stopped at this huge roadside gas station in like Navajo territory and it had tons of rocks. They sold unbroken geodes for super cheap so I bought like 4, and then when I got home I broke them myself and they were stunning. Kept the best one for myself, and gave the other ones out as gifts to some friends. I used to carry a small piece of it when I had important tests, as a good luck charm. I don't know what happened to it though, I need to get some new ones.

When I was little my family would go camping a lot. When we would go I would go rock hunting close to rivers and look for rocks inside the river or lake with a net. I started collecting rocks and I had my room full of rocks they all had names for their physical aspect. I had rock called bumpy because it was full of bumps and another called strips because it had pale with brownish stripes around the rock.

I kinda despise the average pebble or rock. They always seem to fiddle into the worst location possible. Sometimes it’s my shoe giving me a sore on my foot or in front of my wheel while I’m skateboarding causing my board to vault me forward. The worst ones are when I’m on the freeway and they want to kiss me. God knows why he made a soul to invent the full face helmet, the rock.
~Richard Madsen

Rocks are a huge part of my life because I rock climb. I started rock climbing around 3 years ago, and I fell in love with the sport from the very first time I tried it. Before that, I didn't pay any attention to rock formations, but now I'm always looking to find good boulders or top roping routes that could be doable. The type of rock and its features it's a key aspect of rock climbing, different features allow for different styles of climbing, and different textures can make a climb easy or extremely difficult!

Many times in my life I have been exposed to all kinds of rocks but one of the most impressive moments with rocks in my life has been when I first went to Torrey Pines beach. On that beach there are so many rocks that one could stare at them for hours. I was amazed to find so many rocks on a beach since on the beaches I had gone before I found shells, crabs and sometimes pieces of coral. But seeing this beach in San Diego with so much variety, I decided to look for the reason and found that all of the rock layers in the Torrey Pines park area are sedimentary in origin, made up of fragments of older rocks weathered, eroded, and deposited as gravel, sand, silt, and clays. It is so interesting to think that a beach could have so many rocks. The second time I went I brought a bag to collect and store my favorite rocks. I washed the rocks when I got home and put them in a glass jar and even today that I live in Asheville North Carolina I have with me this vase with rocks from Torrey Pines.

Now as I am older I can appreciate the beauty in them. Last year, I went for the first time to visit the national park well known as The Grand Canyon. I was immense and very beautiful. It was amazing to see the aging on the rocks, so much history could be told from those rocks. Definitely a view I'll never forget.

These could be from California, Ireland, England, West Virginia, etc. It's so interesting how each place has distinct minerals, that really got me interested in geology.

Funny enough, every time a friend or family member goes on vacation, I joke around and tell them to "bring me a rock or a pebble". I say it as a joke since it's a priceless souvenir. And more so, I am also curious on how rocks/pebbles from different locations look. No one has brought me any but I recently had a co-worker bring me some pebbles from Monterey Bay. And I also pick up some rocks/pebbles from our Geography Lab field trips. I have seen differences in every rock/pebble and can't wait to grab more from my upcoming cruise locations! Now I have an unintentional rock collection.

Once, as a wee lad, I had climbed the jetty to look for crabs. I climbed out a little further in search of these frustrations before I found myself needing to get from one rock to another. The maneuver was going to require both strength, concentration, and charm. I got my hand holds with my right arm reaching way around the side of this jetting rock, it was very jagged and almost cut my arm. Now I had to do a sort of swing to get the rest of my body to the side. You see the platform favored the left, and was too small to have your feet in any strategic position. So I went for it. I was dead center, 50-50, half way there in my charming, concentrated manor of strength, but then something went horribly wrong. Suddenly my right arm. The arm that was to lead me to victory, was no longer connected to the rock, I had a chunk of the broken off rock in my hand and I fell several feet and to my back as flat as a board against the nastier rocks and sea below. I walked away with scars, and a lesson learned about rocks.

Growing up in the country, there are a lot of stories in my life that involve rocks. However, if I had to pick on I think it would be the time me and my cousins tasked ourselves with the adventure of finding rocks to crack open. Its amazing the versatility you can find when you go looking for rocks. With my scientist kit, we would get a bunch of rocks and put them under a microscope if they were small enough and pick out all the special ones. They all had different textures. colors, shape, and even sturdiness. As we threw them to the ground or smashed them with other rocks, some cracked into smaller pieces, others only cracked, and some were seeming unbreakable. Rocks represent adventure to me and they can extremely fascinating.

I feel like everyone has felt a sense of envy when seeing someone with a shinier, cooler rock than theirs and a sense of accomplishment when being on the receiving end of that envy.

When I would go to visit my grandma at the cemetery there was always this pretty rock that would be near her, even if it was not on her stone it would be next to her or not too far from her. I would notice it every time I went and would tell my mom how nice it was, so we decided to make it her rock that would be with her all the time when we couldn't.
