There are two types of empowerment:

Personal Empowerment- clients directly control what is happening in their own lives.

Social Empowerment- clients have access to resources that can help make personal choices.

Importance of Ecomaps in Empowering Clients

Ecomaps are valuable tools due to their effectiveness in visually representing a client's connection to their external social environment that affect them. In this, social workers are applying the person-in-environment (PIE) perspective which is traditionally used on the micro level, but can be adapted to understand how groups, communities, and organizations intersect affect the client.

Ecomaps help social workers to:

Visualize how a client's social environment interacts with them such:
- Education
- Healthcare
- Employment
Identify existing support networks and help find opportunities to strengthen their capacities
Recognize systemic barriers that limit their access to resources and services

There are many barriers that we as aspiring social workers can face when trying to use empowerment techniques for the betterment of the macro environment.

Lack of Resources, which is why assessing for assets and strengths is important.
Not Being Competent of policies effecting our Clients needs this can lead to professional malpractice. Which is why competency is important.
Different Values, which is why intervention models are very important tools designed to get over stagnation of an issue.
