Compare and contrast point of views from how stories are narrated between first and third person. What words are used in a first person narrative? Who is telling the story and what do we know about them?

Affordances and Limitations

Affordances: It's a story told in the first person whose main character would be just a little older than them. The way it is written it also feels faster paced so there's not a lot of feeling like there's downtime in the story. One of the adult characters in the book actually studies volcanoes so there would be some technical words in there about volcanoes and how they affect the environment.

Limitations: The book is 116 pages which could be a challenge to finish though the chapters are shorter so students could feel their progress better. Also, the character that uses technical words may have some students struggling even with the explanation so maybe having to go over terms again.

Explain differences between the styles of writings. What makes a story a story and what makes an informational text?

Make connections between the text and a visual or oral presentation of the information. Make connection between the diagrams and what happens in I Survived as well as in Fact Planet: Volcanoes.

Affordances: It has plenty of pictures on each page that detail what is being talked about. It is also far shorter than the I Survived book with only 32 pages.

Limitations: Again, there might be problems with technical terms or misunderstandings with the diagrams themselves.

Affordances: A way to visualize where in the world volcanoes are located. See where volcanoes form and what is around them. Gives students the able to discuss what they have learned about plate tectonics and volcanoes by using observations about the map.

Limitations: While not really about this website I had a hard time finding anything for this about volcanoes. It is also just a map so this would be more discussion based but could be a good way for students to show what they know.
