Prosocial behavior is any action intended to help others. One motivation for prosocial behavior is altruism, or the desire to help others with no expectation of reward. In this lesson, we explore prosocial behavior and the elements that social psychologists have identified as predicting it.

Altruism is acting out of concern for another’s well-being. Often, people behave altruistically when they see others in desperate circumstances and feel empathy and a desire to help.

"Reciprocal altruism" is a term used by evolutionary biologists and psychologists to characterize the decision to help with an expectation that one will receive some benefit or payoff to oneself. Even when people don’t expect recognition or reward for a good deed, however, they often feel energized and happy afterward, a sensation sometimes called the "helper's high."

Pluralistic ignorance occurs when people erroneously infer that they feel differently from their peers, even though they are behaving similarly. As one example, imagine the following scenario: You are sitting in a large lecture hall listening to an especially complicated lecture. After many minutes of incomprehensible material, the lecturer pauses and asks if there are any questions. No hands go up. You look around the room. Could these people really understand what the lecturer is talking about? You yourself are completely lost. Your fear of looking stupid keeps you from raising your hand, but as you look around the room at your impassive classmates, you interpret their similar behavior differently: You take their failure to raise their hands as a sign that they understand the lecture, that they genuinely have no questions. These different assumptions you make about the causes of your own behavior and the causes of your classmates’ behavior constitute pluralistic ignorance.

Diffusion of responsibility is a sociopsychological phenomenon whereby a person is less likely to take responsibility for action or inaction when others are present. Considered a form of attribution, the individual assumes that others either are responsible for taking action or have already done so.

Bystander effect
The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological claim that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present; the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that one of them will help. Recent large-scale real-world evidence has called the nature of the effect into question.

Good Samaritan

Then, in a twist of cinematic proportions, a Samaritan walks by, and this guy lends a helping hand! For context, it’s worth knowing that Samaritans and Jews had a generally nasty relationship, so it’s all the more surprising that it was the Samaritan who helped this man (and not the priest or the Levite).

Brain scans have helped us understand a lot of brain disorders better. We have understood depression, alzheimer, and many other brain disorders. Before brain scans was a thing people usually judged a person’s mental state by their behavior they show. This could mean a very naughty person who doesn’t have any brain damage can be sent to mental prison. And a person with different level of depression might show same symptoms. But with brain scans we can see the difference between different level of depression. With brain scans we can identify the reasons for this disorders. And we can solve it. We can Learn more about the brain. This make us more advanced us a civilization.
