CHCL - "Evaluating Fantasy" (p. 165)

What are the fantasy elements of the story?
This story contains multiple worlds. The young girl goes on adventures into different universes with her seven imaginary horses. There is no "villain" or superhero, but there is definitely a use of magic and imagination all throughout the story.

How has the author made the story believable?
The story is about a little girl and her imagination. Many children can relate to this; they usually have a larger imagination than those who are older. The story starts off with the seven horses, which is uncommon, but still possible. The child-like mentality would be extremely interested and likely to believe the story based on the simple relatable parts.

Is the story logical and consistent within the framework established by the author?
Yes. The story makes sense the entire way through and remains consistent based on the framework created.

Is the plot original and ingenious?
Creative does not provide the story with enough justice. The reader can see the young girl's imagination run wild. There are many adventures taken with her horses, but it takes place as if it might be a dream (which I would consider original for a bedtime story).

Is there a universal truth underlying the metaphor of the fantasy?
Each journey taken in the story can be applied to a real life situation. Although a real person cannot journey to another universe to experience these different things, they happen in our own lives. It is a real story masked by fantasies.

How does the story compare with other books of the same kind or by the same author?
This is the only book by this particular author. The story relates to other fantasy books in a way due to it's telling of relatable scenarios in a make-believe way.

Batchelder Award Criteria -
1. Focus of attention
This book was translated by Sara Khalili which makes it substantial text. The book was originally written in Persian. The most important element of the book is the text, rather than the emphasis being mainly on the illustrations.

2. Relationship to original work
It is clear that the translation is true to the original. The story is written much differently from the average bedtime story. There is a lot of description about each individual horse. There is also some vocabulary that is not usually seen in books meant for younger children, such as "blossoms" and "suckle". Although they are not challenging, they are uncommon for a children's book. This gives an idea of how similar it is to the original, and proves that is was not "Americanized".

3. Quality of the U.S. book
This book still provides children with the same theme in the story that is translated that is meant to be relayed in the original. It still appeals to a young audience and is as effective to the American audience as it is to the native audience. As said prior, it may not be the norm for an American story, but it is still just as beneficial to their learning as another bedtime story would be.
