Assessment and treatment units allow for assessment of a patient to determine diagnosis , treatment plans and intervention which then influences care plans and treatment options as well as rehabilitation for transfer into community living.

Admission may be for a number of reasons:

• Mental health decline

• Physical health decline

• Increase in behaviours communicating distress

• Medication changes

• Epilepsy monitoring

This will provide a quick overview of the ward and what to expect!

This can alter due to the ward dynamic , things that are going on and the presentation of patients.

It can be difficult to stick to time schedules in such a busy environment but this is the 'typical' day to day running and duties of the nurse.

Shifts: Long - 07:00 - 19:40 / 19:00-07:40

Short - 07:00- 14:50 / 13:40-21:30/ 09:00-17:00

Shift will be allocated to students following meeting their practice supervisor and assessor. Students should remain punctual to their shifts and follow correct sickness procedure if unable to attend. Students roughly complete 3 Long shifts a week but this can be reduced to short shifts if required.

Dress code: Student nurse scrubs , closed toe footwear , No Crocs, Bare below the elbow.

Students will be expected to follow the dress code as this is in place for safety and infection control. The dress code policy will be available upon request.

Attitude:

Student nurses are expected to uphold the NMC code of conduct and act with professionalism and commitment to learning through duration of placement. We expect to observe passion and eagerness to learn. Students will be supported with all areas of learning and will have various opportunities to seek development.

You will be allocated a nurse as your practice supervisor and a nurse as your practice assessor.

All nurses are very knowledgeable and will be able to support you with your learning and development at Ty Lafant.

The nurses encourage questions and supporting with learning so please feel free to ask as many questions as possible and they will do their best to answer!

The Safe wards model seeks to explain the differing rates of both conflict and containment and offers interventions that are designed to reduce the risk of conflict and containment events occurring. 

We want to provide the best care possible, so it is really important to us that people tell us about their health care experiences. Feedback will help us to learn, make changes where we need to and celebrate what we do well.
