He thought he could make some money out of the deal and perhaps convince the president to set him free. Geronimo was a prisoner at the time in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, but he wasn’t locked up. He lived in a house with his daughter. He farmed a plot of land and also made a good chunk of change selling souvenirs of himself to white people who regarded him as a wild animal, or a heroic freedom fighter. Still, he hated Oklahoma and wanted to return to his home in Arizona.

A band of people from the Apache tribe including Geronimo attacked towns in Arizona. The Apache raided farms, houses, ect. in or near Bear Valley, leaving four settlers dead. They also captured a young girl, who was found dead after. They captured or destroyed a large amount of private property. When the United States Army learned of the attack, they ordered for people to hunt and capture the band. During that trip Mexican soldiers led by Colonel Jose Carrasco attacked his family's camp. Geronimo's mom, his wife, Alope, and their children were all murdered. Geronimo burned his family’s belonging as his Apache tradition before heading into the forest, where he claimed he heard a voice that told him, "No gun will ever kill you. I will take the bullets from the guns, and I will guide your arrows."
