The main idea behind this article is to provide an explanation of why our coastlines and eastern shores especially are in so much danger for future flooding. With rising sea levels, living in our beach towns pose a great risk. The main reason the water levels are rising are that Melting mountain glaciers add more water, and higher global temperatures make the oceans warm and swell in a process called thermal expansion. The flooding could happen at any time, even on a sunny day with blue skies. This type of flooding is called sunshine flooding, sunshine floods are floods that can happen at any possible time no matter the weather conditions. They can catch people off guard and cause great damage along coastlines. If we do not pay attention to these floods and fix the problem people homes, workplaces, and livelihoods could be destroyed. The reason that the east coast is more vulnerable than the west or any other places in the US is that Antarctica's ice sheets are melting faster than initial models predicted, and ocean currents sweep that water northward. Gravity is the main cause of this. Antarctica's very large mass releases a huge pull on the oceans, all the way to the Atlantic, but as the continent loses ice, its strength will weaken, allowing that closely held water to flow toward the opposite pole. If we try to stop greenhouse gases we could avoid the eastern shores being washed away, but it is a very large task. The article quoted “This year the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a report aiming to help local governments such as Norfolk's get ready. It is the first analysis to break down vulnerability into one-degree chunks of latitude and longitude about 70 miles across for the entire U.S. coastline, and it lays out possible scenarios for average global sea-level rise from “low” (a rise of 0.3 meter, or about one foot) to “extreme” (2.5 meters, or about eight feet). It also accounts for local factors such as subsidence, or sinking land. In nearly all the scenarios, rises in the Northeast and the western Gulf of Mexico are much higher than the worldwide average.” this means that if this continues to become a problem, other beaches in places around the US become more vulnerable for sunshine flood and rising sea levels. Coastal communities can expect waters to climb as much as 11.5 feet about 3.5 feet more than the global average by 2100.  Larry Atkinson, a professor of oceanography at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, who was not involved in the NOAA report. “Greenhouse gases can be stopped tomorrow,” he says, “and there will still be sea-level rise into the next century.” He says this because he knows that either way there will be a rising sea level in the future no matter what. Researchers projected six possible scenarios for how extreme sea levels rising could be with 0 meaning intermediate to low and a 2.5 being extreme.
