Write your personal innovation manifesto!

Here's a short example:

I believe that innovation in L&D starts with overcoming my own limiting belief as a professional. It should be rooted in answering real business problems, not in vanity. As failure is an integral part of being innovative, I'll embrace every single one of them until it feels like a natural part of the journey."

I worked with a company to do project management for a group of engineers.

For the participants team project/ role play, we had them going to the moon. We divided up in groups like logistics, HR/training, facilities, rocket crew, etc. each group had to plan their schedule, estimate cost & resources, make a work breakdown structure of tasks needed to get to the moon and what happens when you arrive.

So let’s say facilities had to go first to build structures. For people to live and work. The flight crew needed two crews to rotate so lots of training for them. Logistics was all supply chain and resources needed for trip and stay.

So much more but it was fun, and engaging; each team came with a name and assigned colors.
The engineers enjoyed the activity because it was different and it pushed them outside of their comfort zone a little. 🚀🌖

By Crystal Andrus

I used to work for a major automaker; we had a good training budget but it was far from enough (we had 7k employees). So we used to use the power of peer-learning; and we used to train internal facilitators to spread the word about critical topics. Another situation I remember was (it happened 6+ years ago, so at the time it was innovative haha) putting together an event inspired in Ted Talks: short and sweet interesting content from business to career. It started as a specific need of a certain group of employees that lacked learning opportunities, and the project was so well received that became corporate and we ended up winning a prize as one of the top 3 most innovative learning initiatives of the year from the HQ in France.

Wow! I loved this resource, thank you for sharing!

🤔 Do you consciously invest "innovation" time in your busy day? Not consciously! But I'll definitely put into practice some of the ideas on this PDF. I specially liked the one on getting a demo account that has nothing to do with my work. I bet it will help me make interesting connections (and bends, brakes, borrows, and bends, as I learned yesterday!)

🤔 What do you do to continuously develop your innovation skills and mindset? I've been working on making experiments that will allow me to try something new while I test an hypothesis. A great framework that I've been using constantly is the Minimum Viable Test by Gagan Biyani. Also, since I know they're experiments, I don't put too much pressure on myself, and just try to embrace a discovery mindset.

Personally, I get most inspired by:
1. People and seeing them "in action", making and creating.

2. Art installations, especially those participative and interactive.

3. Podcasts - there's something very personal in hearing only someone's voice. And I feel their passion and it makes me dream about the impossible 😁

4. I take on stretch projects, especially with the Shakers: building Coaching for L&D, UNCONventional L&D, the idea of the Marketplace, the takeover and so on. All the little projects I say yes to in this community, they allow me to flex my creativity muscle and expand my skillset.
