Tony crag was born in liver pool, UK in 1949 and has lived and worked in Wuppertal, Germany since 1977.

I think Tony being Britain is relevant to the work ‘Britain seen from the north’ as he made this work during a visit to Britain in 1981, when he left that the nation was beset by social and economic difficulties. The figure to the left is a portrait of the artist. Cragg lives in Germany, so although Britain is his native country he was viewing It through the eyes of an outsider.

  

Thatcherism is a branch of conservative ideology that originated from the ideals of teaching of Margaret thatcher, the Prime Minister from 1979 until 1990. Essentially, thatcher believed in the primacy of competition and a free market, and possessed of a fundamental  distrust of the power of government. She also believed in the right of individuals to have the freedom to determine their own lives, as long as they remained within certain boundaries. For this reason, Thatcherism has also been called “neo liberal”

Trouve is a natural or discarded object found by chance and held to have aesthetic value.

Cragg uses random objects and materials he found on the ground to create to create this work, as during thatcher period there was economic crisis which led to an unclean and unstable economy. He used these materials to show his passion for Britain. This work was first exhibited in the large upstairs space at the Whitechapel art gallery in London in 1981 and is now in the Tate collection. 

 

 

 

The themes that the exhibition trailer focuses on seems like they are based on the views of how turner saw the world in his time. As it includes some of Turners paintings and things that were modern to his time such as the train and, and the steam ship. It may also be based on the environmental state of the world in his time as the trailer includes trains and steam ships which release co2 and effect the environment. It is very fabled and remarkable.

The fighting temeraire was painted 1839

The Northampton election, 6^th December 1830

Pain, steam, speed was painted in 1844

I think these images are relevant to the exhibition because they have connections with the industrial revolution. All the visual language such as colours, lines, and texture used in the trailer are the same as the visual language in Turners paintings. Towards the end of the trailer we can see letters of the election which is related to The Northampton election painting. At the very end where the train scene comes we can hear train sounds which correlates with the pain, steam, speed painting. The fighting temeraire is thought to represent the decline the Britain navy, the Temeraire is shown travelling east, away from the sunset. They have created a realistic 3D formation of those turner paintings to perhaps create a substantial and a legitimate effect of his paintings to get more experience in how Turner saw the world. The steam ship releases co2 which is what the industrial revolution started doing when machines were invented. This maybe because they are creating a story of Turners point of view on the world in his time.

·        The exhibition takes place at the Tate museum from 28^th of October 2020 to the 7^th of March 2021.

Outcome 1 (2D) postcards 

My starting point for the post cards were my Sandycombe lodge perspective drawings and my artist response to one of the artist I researched. For one of my drawings I used a pencil so lightly draw the house first then I shaded the out edges, then I made marks all over the house to creat texture. For the fire place drawing I drew it out with pencil and coloured it in with colour pencils. I wanted to resemble her work as much as possible so I used photoshop and edited the moon behind the branches.  My photographs were inspired by Susan Derges work. I think the quality of my postcards is really virtuous as the photographs are clear and the art work is also well drawn. The visual language I have used in my work is texture, tone, lines, composition, and shape/form. I could improve by creating better drawings of turners house or perhaps using different materials to creat different textures. I think my postcards are effective because they remind the visitors of Turners house, it can be like a memory of the visit to the exhibition. My postcards will be targeted at people in their early twenties and above who hold interest in photography, artwork as that is what I have created my postcards with. I have created my postcards digitally without using paper or other common materials, this helps the environmental issues as I’m not wasting paper or any other traditional

Material that will cause harm to the environment. 

Outcome 2 (3D) product design

My starting point for the product designs were my Sandycombe lodge drawings. I decided to do the pillow and bag. I drew the art work then cut it out with the help of the product template and stuck it down. Then coloured in areas where I couldn’t print the artwork. My work was inspired by photographs of Turners house and some of the products I had seen online with Turners artwork on it. I think the quality of my work is satisfactory as the artwork on the products is  related to Turners house. I feel like the products are effective as the pillow and bag are things people use in everyday life. So Yh e visitors can put it to their use and also remember the Turner exhibition through out. I could improve it by perhaps adding a bit of Turners paintings, maybe one from the exhibition. My products are targeted at everyone as I think these kinds of products can be put to use by anyone. The process of my products promotes environmental issues as it is going to be made locally in twickenham uk, and won’t be imported from foreign country’s as this will reduce air pollution.

Outcome 3 (4D) moving image

My starting point was my perspective drawings from Turner house of the exterior. The technique I used for this was drawing, I drew all the images in the animation with a regular pencil. My artwork was heavily inspired by the colour theme of Turners painting ‘Fishermen at sea.’ I really liked the concept of the outer corners being dark and the light in the centre. My work was also heavily inspired by Lottie Reiniger’s work as she uses silhouette to create her work, and I was extremely pleased with it as I have never done anything in silhouette before. I think the quality of my animation is really good as it has smooth transitions and the images go really well together. The purpose of my moving image was to combine my inspiration ideas I took from both Turner and Reiniger and come up with a good quality animation. My target audience are people who hold interest in work done in silhouette and animations of still images. I think I was successful at appealing to them as the animation looks really clean and cinematic. To promote environmental issues I have also included nature in my animation and boats. 

Summary

To do my research I used some of the websites provided by my teacher, articles, and museum websites. I found the articles most useful because they provide detailed information with dates, names and facts. I made a timetable at home to manage my time as it was hard for me to keep up with work at home without one. I put in extra hours on days I finished early to complete my work to a good standard and also to catch up on my previous work. I came across a lot of challenges, but most difficult were the digital as some of the times I didn’t know how to use photoshop, how to layer images. I came across these by asking my teacher for help and if I didn’t understand I would come up with an alternative and do it on paper instead. I found discussing/writing about my ideas really helpful as it also helped me develop my idea as I went on. I would get multiple different ideas whilst writing about my work as to why my animation idea changed a couple of times. I think I recorded my project developed quite well as everything I did I photographed it and uploaded it onto my padlet wall so I could compare it all at the end to see how much I have developed. I think In this project I it was harder for me to concentrate on my work as most of it is online and I had to look at my screen way to long sometime which would leave me with headaches. To ensure I was still safe I took short breaks in between doing my work so my eyes got a bit of rest. I think it’s hard for me to come up with different ideas until I have talked to someone about it and they’ve given me advice, I would like to develop myself in that part.
