         <description><![CDATA[<div>My definition of comprehension is understanding of a text/topic at a deep enough level that you could tell/teach others about it. <br><br>This year I moved to a new grade level (2nd to Kindergarten), new school, and new district, so I had a lot to learn. What comes to mind, though, is my learning of a new reading foundations curriculum. <br><br>The <strong>first</strong> step I took was to look over the curriculum on my own to try to make connections to my training in foundational skills and previous curriculum. The <strong>second</strong> step I took was to try out the new curriculum on my own daughter who was getting ready to enter kindergarten. The <strong>third</strong> step I took was to ask questions of the other kindergarten teacher on areas I was still confused about. The <strong>fourth</strong> step I took was to begin using the curriculum with my students, and continually asking clarification questions and reflecting with the other kindergarten teacher. The <strong>fifth</strong>&nbsp;step, which ideally would have been an earlier step but was out of my control, was to attend the district training on the actual curriculum and collaborate with other kindergarten teachers in the district. In a way, though, it was nice to have had some practice with the curriculum before this training because I was able to keep up easily with teachers who had been using the curriculum for over a year. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Comprehension: Grasping a concept in a way that allows for applying that concept in a variety of ways in a variety of settings.<br><br>I learned how to use a new reporting tool at my job last week.&nbsp;<br>1. I took an online training that introduced the new tool.<br>2. I watched my colleague use it. He explained the various aspects of the tool.<br>3. I navigated the tool with my trainer sitting next to me, guiding me.<br>4. I practiced reporting with the new tool, and my colleague did a quality check and gave me feedback.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Comprehension: Understanding a concept / being able to retell the key ideas or details of that concept / being able to teach a friend that concept.&nbsp;<br><br>Our district has adopted Writer's Workshop for our writing standards. I learn something new each and every day as we work our way through what this looks like in kindergarten (especially in our kindergarten - which is an impoverished, urban part of Kansas City, Kansas).&nbsp;<br><br>We are working our way through planning. So step 1 has been looking at our standards, then looking at the unit plans the district has provided us with. We have used the help of our instructional coach several times in helping us plan out the units. Step 2 would be the planning out the whole unit, then planning each mini-lesson. Step 3 is implementing the lessons we have planned out. Step 4 has been reflecting on how each lesson went with students, how each lesson went as the teacher teaching and next steps moving forward.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp; &nbsp; I would define comprehension as being able to understand and remember the content being taught, to be able to apply it and define it in ones own words.</div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I last learned something new during a training I went to this summer for math teachers. I learned that students are more willing to make mistakes if they are not permanent. So I asked my principal to install another dry erase board in my classroom so that 3 of my walls are covered so I could have my students up at the boards doing their work. The students seem to enjoy it more and are not shy about trying new math skills. If I gave them a worksheet they might just sit and their desk and try to be ignored.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Comprehension:&nbsp; I would define comprehension as a level of understanding.&nbsp; Comprehension is understanding the content well enough to be able to apply it in different situations. &nbsp;<br>The last time I learned something new was when our district adopted a new quarterly assessment tool. &nbsp;<br>1. I attended trainings about using the assessment tool. &nbsp;<br>2.&nbsp; I asked questions. &nbsp;<br>3.&nbsp; Once, I felt prepared I had to start using it.&nbsp; I knew I might make mistakes at the start but I realized that was part of the learning process. &nbsp;<br>4.  I continued to ask questions throughout the process.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Comprehension is the understanding of a text by making connections and the process of questioning.&nbsp; Each person's understanding of a text can be different, as the lens through which one reads a book varies based on life experiences and background knowledge.<br><br>The last new thing I learned was about a pilot program for kindergarten readiness my school will be testing out for the state of Kansas. I watched a video on why we need kindergarten readiness data.  I attended a training and reviewed the surveys/forms to be used by teachers and parents for administration.  I discussed with my team a strategy to implement the collection of the data for the current school year and future years.  The final step (which will be completed in a couple weeks) will be to collect the data when parents come for parent-teacher conferences.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Comprehension is the how and how well you understand a text.&nbsp; This is done through making connections, retelling, predictions, and questioning.&nbsp; There are various levels of understanding and takes place through informational and literature text.<br><br>The latest new thing that I have learned was a new assessment tool that my school is piloting this year.  The first thing that I did was play around and explore the website.  I watched tutorial videos and read up on the all of the resources they had available.  We later had an introduction training to the program and after giving our first assessment we had another brief training overview.  I had learned best by exploring and implementing strategies and intervention tools with my own students on my own.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Comprehension is understanding communication, through hearing, seeing, reading, movement, feeling, or any other learning style as indicated by Gardner.&nbsp; After understanding, one engages in the use or application of the understanding, and through trial and error, which promotes the refining of understanding into mastery.&nbsp; Mastery progresses to cross-curricular understanding when the application of mastery in one content area can be applied in another.<br><br>I learn something new everyday from my students! [How many different ways can you wear a shirt?] However, our school -wide focus at Stanley is Covey's <em>7 Habits of Happy Kids</em>. We read the book last year, and introduced the concept to the students. This year we are digging deeper, to instill leadership in our students and ownership of their learning. The first two weeks of school were an overview of the habits. Each month we are focusing on a specific habit, and instilling in our students [and ourselves] how to #1 Be Proactive, #2 Work with the End in Mind, #3 Put First Things First #4 Think Win-Win, #5 Seek First to Understand, then be Understood, #6 Synergize, #7 Sharpen the Saw</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Comprehension is the process of understanding something. This can happen through a variety of ways and will be different for each person. Comprehension is something that is not able to be seen.<br><br>In a class I took during Fall I, I was unsure of the format for the final project. I had not seen the template or knew much about the design. I first had to look over the information provided by the instructor. Second, I did some of my own research to see how I was going to be able to make it work for kindergarten. Third, I asked my school librarian for some help. The class was on literacy and I thought she might have a little insight that might help me. Fourth, I asked the instructor to post examples. Finally, with the help of the examples, librarian, and the research I did, I was able to complete the final project.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I would define comprehension as a personal understanding of the messages, concepts, and/ or ideas that a text is presenting.&nbsp; Because we all have different amounts, and types, of background knowledge and experiences the extent of, and the process in which we arrive at, that understanding varies from individual to individual.<br><br></div><div>In my previous course here at Baker I learned how to create a website, which is something I had never attempted to do before because I am still learning how to be technology savvy.&nbsp; I first watched tutorials provided by my instructor.&nbsp; I then decided on a theme that would be beneficial to me (per the assignment requirements).&nbsp; I started by creating my website little by little, referring back to the tutorials repeatedly.&nbsp; After I got the website set up I went back and forth to Google Help pages to continue adding content, and editing.&nbsp; Finally, after I was happy with the content and look of my website, I shared it on the internet, and turned the URL in to my instructor.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I define comprehension as "an understanding of something." I think comprehension goes beyond literature and other texts but is across all of the curriculum and is relates to what we hear, read, see, and experience. Comprehension is the "a ha" or "now I get it" moments of life.<br><br>The last time I learned something was the difference between someone being mean and someone being bullied. I had never actually been explicitly given the distinction between them. Of course I had come up with my own definitions for them but in a meeting the other day our assistant principal brought it up. The group debated a little back and forth about the definitions of each. We Googled it and debated some more. Then the principal pulled out a poster and all of us ohhed and ahhed over it because it was great! It broke down each one and spelled out the difference so clearly!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>To me, comprehension is being able to apply knowledge to real world situations.&nbsp; In my science class, students are required to learn a large amount of terminology in order to understand content.&nbsp; Some students try to just memorize all the information, but students who only memorize, tend to forget the information rather quickly. &nbsp; However, students who comprehend the information and can apply their knowledge, have a higher chance of retaining the information long term.&nbsp;<br><br>At Monday's teacher in-service, I attended a session that discussed Adobe Spark. Adobe Spark is an online application that allows for the creation of videos, posts, and posters. At the in-service, the presenter showed us the website and quickly walked us through how the technology worked, but then allowed us to "play around" with how to create different presentations. After 10 minutes, she then asked us how we could use this technology with our students. We were challenged to think about how we could take this technology and create a teaching strategy with our students. After discussion, we were then allowed to experiment on our own with the technology.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br></div><div>Comprehension is the action or capability of processing or understanding something, rather hearing it orally or by reading. &nbsp;</div><div>Comprehension is accepting information, organizing it in a manner that is familiar, and demonstrating the understanding by completing a task or project. &nbsp;</div><div>The last thing I have learned about is a new special education website for the district.&nbsp; The website has all the required documents or forms needed to comply to the law of special education and the requirements needed for the district.&nbsp; When first introduced to the website I observed as my coordinator walk us through the logins and information or home page.&nbsp; I took notes on information that was new to me.&nbsp; After the meeting I navigated through the site on my own and recorded some observations and questions to share with my special education team. &nbsp; I have since gone back and used the site when completing the last three IEP meetings, each time becoming more familiar with the process and its resources. &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My definition of comprehension is understanding why or how something came to be, being able to explain a process and apply that knowledge to new situations.&nbsp;<br><br>I am in the process of learning all about Standards Based Grading. I have attended many professional development meetings in order to understand our districts new grading system, which includes new learning targets, new expectations, and a new computerized grade book. I tend to jump in and try things rather than seek out an answer from someone else. So far this has saved me time and helped me remember the steps to enter grades, find learning targets, etc.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My definition of comprehension is the ability to understand something on a deep enough level to use and apply the information.&nbsp;<br><br>The last time I learned something new was at my grade level professional development training. We are looking more closely at the Marzano evaluation indicators used in our district and how we can focus on our personal improvement goals. My grade level team and I have been learning about interactive notebooks and how they can be used to help students create meaningful notes and revise knowledge throughout our English Language Arts units. To implement this, we have been looking closely at our standards and creating graphic organizers that are interactive and help the students take notes. We have discussed also our next steps of evaluating and providing feedback to students on their notes so that we can build in opportunities for students to revise their thinking.</div>]]></description>

Rachel Allegree                                                                      My definition of comprehension is the ability to understand something
on a deep level and then applying the information to a new situation. 

 

I am always learning something new! It was my first year in
my current district last year and I was always learning something new. Honestly,
it was exhausting. I had been teaching for three years before that, but the
districts way of teacher was very different. I am currently learning about
behavior and academic scales. Academic scales are a great support to students
as they develop a vision for what meeting and exceeding a given standard looks
like. The first step was to attend professional development over scales. The
second step is to look at examples of academic scales that have already been
made. The third step is to develop an academic scale with a teammate. The fourth
step is to create an academic scale with my students based off of the scale
made with my teammate.

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My definition of comprehension: Reading during which there is activation of prior knowledge, the reader is able to pick up on inferences, the reader is able to see what information can be carried over to other parts of life, there is an understanding of the author's viewpoint, and most of the key vocabulary is understood by the reader. &nbsp;<br>The last time I learned something new would be today during the reading selection. 1. I read the material, 2. Remembered material I had read during undergraduate courses and during masters courses, 3. Key terms are repeated many times in education courses which make understanding education jargon easier to understand, 4. I file away new teaching strategies away in long term memory, 5. Use new information in the assignments which also helps me put information in long term storage.</div>]]></description>
