One of the holidays celebrated in Guatemala is All Saints Day. It takes place on November 1st. All Saints Day originated in the eighth century when Pope Gregory III declared it would be a day to celebrate all saints. Another holiday observed by Guatemala is Día de Los Muertos and is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Día de Los Muertos originated in contemporary Mexico 3000 years ago; it evolved from the Aztec's and other Nahua people's rituals. The Aztecs and Nahua believed that death was essential and always present in life. In addition to the other two holidays, there is also the holiday Burning of the Devil. Guatemala celebrates it on December 7th; originating in the 18th century (1540) in Antigua during colonial times. This holiday burns away all the evil from last year in preparation for the Christmas holidays. It started when monasteries would burn a devil-like figure on the Day of the Rosary.

Among the many holidays celebrated in Guatemala one of them is Fiesta de Santo Tomás. It originated in the town of Chichicastenango over 400 years ago. The festival takes place to celebrate the town's patron saint. It lasts a week and occurs from December 14th through December 21st. The next holiday that Guatemala celebrates is Christmas. It is celebrated on December 24th and 25th. The holiday originated in the fourth century; it followed Saturnalia. The Roman church celebrated the holiday during the reign of Constantine. Lastly is New Year's observed on December 31st. The first known record of a New Year's festival is from about 2000 BCE in Mesopotamia.

They celebrate All Saints Day by holding festivals. One town holds a horse race; Todos Santos Cuchumatán, the race is called Carrera de Caballos. Fiambre is abundant in the celebration. Guatemala celebrates Día de Los Muertos by making ofrendas and placing food on them for their past loved ones. They also visit their graves to pray and place food. The people of Guatemala spend time feasting on homemade food for this holiday too. Guatemala hosts a giant kite festival on Día de Los Muertos as well. One of Guatemala's traditional holidays is Buring of the Devil, which is celebrated by buying devil pinatas and burning paper and the pinatas in the street to ward off evil. Another tradition in Burning of the Devil is lighting lanterns, bonfires, and firecrackers. Celebrating Fiesta de Santo Tomás by dancing and the men will hang from ropes that are attached to a tall central pole. The Christmas holiday in Guatemala by spending time with the family making favorite dishes like tamales, and other traditional food, decorating the Christmas tree with homemade ornaments. New Year's celebrations and traditions are like the ones in the U.S., gathering to watch fireworks, drinking and being with family and friends. New Year's Day is a quiet day for resting and recuperation.

During my research of Guatemala's holidays, I have noticed that we are similar in some respects, but also quite different. I do not celebrate as many holidays as them and hardly have any traditions. In comparison to me, Guatemala celebrates many different holidays, and they all have their own deep-rooted origins. The holidays that are celebrated include: All Saints Day, Día de Los Muertos, Burning of The Devil, and Fiesta de Santo Tomás. Each holiday comes with its own unique celebration and traditions. However, we do share celebrating Christmas and New Year's. Guatemala's celebrations for these holidays are like my own. They gather with family for Christmas and make food and for New Year's they light off fireworks and drink with family as well.
