One of my proudest teaching experiences was developing a 5th-grade unit at Cumberland Elementary in Whitefish Bay where students chose a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal they felt passionate about. They researched their topic, wrote a persuasive research paper, and created a service project connected to their findings. With my principal’s support, I was able to design the unit to be project-based, globally focused, and rooted in service, helping students see how their learning could make a real difference in the world.- Ms. Izquierdo

We’d share steaming plates of mamaliga, swap stories, and laugh until our cheeks hurt, often over my less-than-perfect Romanian or Russian, which Nadejda teased me about with so much warmth and good humor. I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Giza Pyramids in Egypt during a month-long college study trip to the Middle East. Walking on the desert sand where these pyramids were constructed over 4,000 years ago was so humbling and gave me such a deep appreciation for the skill, mathematics, engineering, creativity, and perseverance of the people of this ancient civilization.

I am so proud that I have been a part of the Wauwatosa School District for nearly 30 years. From student teaching at McKinley in the mid-1990s, and then returning four years later as a classroom teacher, I have had the privilege of teaching many classes of students in Senior Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 5th grade over the course of 16 years. For the past 11 years, I have been serving as an instructional coach at nearly all of the elementary schools in our district. Year after year, I continue to be inspired by the students, families, and educators in our school district, and I am so excited for the many opportunities that we all have to learn and grow together!

It is one of the city’s largest and most traditional markets, stretching over several city blocks. La Merced is a barrio southeast of the historic center of Mexico city and is one of the oldest sections of the city, established over 700 years ago by the Mexica as part of the founding of Tenochtitlan. I also got to meet part of my boyfriends family and learned more spanish along the way!

Very shortly after I arrived, I became an After School Enrichment & Family Engagement Coordinator for GD Jones Elementary, part of the Wausau School District. I absolutely loved coordinating family school events and managing the after school and summer programs there!

This was one of my proudest moments in my teaching career! As an elementary teacher I received a secret jersey from a former student. Teachers who received a jersey wore them to the Junior High Football Game. During halftime, we learned that each player was asked to write a letter of appreciation to a former teacher that they felt impacted their life the most. That teacher would be sent their old jersey and meet up with them on the field. These are two of my former 5th graders who were in 8th grade when this photo was taken. Mr. Mills, #3 was the student who wrote to me. We talk to this day!

Ms. Garza had an opportunity to visit Guatemala as a tourist with a childhood friend; the friend had served for 3 years on an education related project of the Peace Corps.

Ms. Garza and her family often find themselves traveling to PCB Florida for spring break. When her 3 children were the ages of Madison Elementary School students, the family began building some form of a sand castle daily during their week long stay. Many fellow vacationers enjoy watching the progress and whatever new creation the family comes up with for the following day. Waves lapping the shore and the sun's golden hour as its rays dance along the sand is forever a cherished moment; more so on annual family adventures!

Ms. Garza earned her Master's Degree with 3 endorsements from the University of WI-Superior.

She first spent time within the community assisting people in the aftermath of flooding. Volunteers slept in a church basement and daily worked on clearing debris, moving brush, and listening to stories the residents affected and served wanted to share. UW-Superior was where helpers were able to shower after the work day.

Having worked in the community for a few weeks over a couple of different summers created a connection during the virtual work the program encompassed.
