     I think the reader used that theme because it applies to mostly every refuge ever. The fact that there's people stuck in the middle of a war was terrifying ,holding onto dear life is very horrifying. But, having hope and working together can take people so far. 
   For example in the book on pages 118-119 “‘Tell me about the inspection shoulder” whispered Ingrid “...Blue scarf.”(Joana). ““Blue is my favorite color.””(Ingrid to the soldier) “The soldier stared at Ingrid. His silence was elastic...He held his scarfe out to Ingrid. He waited… “Yes” He smiled, nodding . “Take it”... “Your lucky. My youngest brother was born blind.””
    Ingrid was blind and if any soldiers find a blind person “they would be killed (pg 90)”. Those pages show how people help one another in  a time of crises, how Joana bandage her eyes up making them look like their hurt but not blind and telling her about the soldier. As well as how the soldier knew she was blind but let her pass. With both of their help she passed through the inspection point which would lead to freedom from the war.
