What Exactly IS Antibiotic Resistance?

Well Antibiotic Resistance is a disease's bacteria becoming resistant to the medicine that was originally used to treat it. This means that if the treatment is used on the disease it has no effect on it whatsoever making it completely useless against the disease in question. Antibiotics are used to kill off bacteria altogether and the development of resistance to it can be detrimental.

A bacteria that becomes resistant often changes and develops a part to it that makes the Antibiotic ineffective.

Possible Changes:
Pumping Mechanism

A bacterium can develop a sort of pumping mechanism that causes the bacteria to reject the Antibiotic making it unable to reach it's main target within the bacteria.

Killer Chemicals

A bacterium can also develop a chemical that the bacteria is able to utilise to kill the Antibiotic altogether. This means that the Antibiotic will have no effect as it is dead.

Getting Rid of the Target

A bacterium can also develop the ability to live without the part of it that the Antibiotic targets causing the Antibiotic to not be able to target it at all.

HOW Does Antibitoic Resistance Happen?

Antibiotic Resistance is something that occurs naturally but due to our excessive or even improper use of Antibiotics it occurs more than is natural.

How it Happens:
Naturally

Antibiotic Resistance happens naturally as a disease reproduces. When it reproduces it can have a chance to change slightly in its DNA which may result in it changing to become resistant.

Speed Up

Due to improper use of Antibiotics (ie. not finishing courses or using medicine that has not been prescribed to you) the Antibiotic becomes less effective causing it to not kill off the bacteria altogether. This causes the remaining bacteria to change to resist the antibiotic and reproduce with other bacteria and make them become resistant as well. This starts a chain reaction and the resistance just continues on and on and on...

After learning all of this you probably wondering "Can I do anything to help?" well the answer is..... Of Course You Can!
But how exactly? Look below and read.

Ways YOU Can Help:
Finishing Your Antibiotic Course

When you get antibiotics prescribed to you there will be a day to day course on what exactly to take on what day. A great way to help would be to finish the course shown, even if you feel like you have no symptoms the disease may still be in you and needs to be killed! If you don't there is a possiblility that the diseases will be able to mutate and change so that it resists the medicine that once was able to treat it.

Not Using Someone Elses's Medicine

Some people take Antibiotics that are prescribed to others because they think that it's the easiest way to get medicine witoit having to go to the Pharmacy. Unfortunately this doesn't work well at all because a Antibiotics course as been designed to kill off a diseases altogether and if used improperly won't work as well.
