My team's base will be really close to the Artemis base camp NASA is planning, because the South Pole is perfect for a team base, and it will have great sunlight to help power the camp. However, the temperature change may pose a challenge, but it can also be used to our advantage by being able to keep the water ice solid, and occasionally, with indoor heaters and electrical, we can then later melt the ice for drinkable water and water to water our crops in the greenhouse. A few facilities we may need to set up are the standard laboratory for data collection and experimentation, a radio tower to communicate back to earth, a greenhouse for the crops, and a home base for our scientists and farmers to rest at the end of the day. Overall, these constructions may take years to finish, so we probably won't get done with contruction by 2050.

Our base is going to be on the Moon because there is more terrain and the soil we got from the first task works very well with the potato soil. Our potato's will go in a space ship to the Moon It should take only one day to build the base camp since we only need pots. Our pots will be in a container with oxygen. Using this container will prevent weather conditions affecting our plants and bad climate. We will grow the potatoes on t he south side on the Moon. We chose this spot because its by the space camp and it has good climate.

Our team’s base will be located very close to NASA’s planned Artemis base camp, since the lunar South Pole offers ideal conditions for a settlement. The area receives consistent sunlight, which will be crucial for powering our camp through solar energy. One of the main challenges we’ll face is the extreme temperature shifts. However, this can also work in our favor by preserving the natural ice deposits. With proper heating and electrical systems inside the base, we can melt this ice when needed to produce drinking water and irrigate crops in our greenhouse. Key facilities we'll need to build include a standard lab for scientific research and experiments, a communications tower to stay in contact with Earth, a greenhouse for growing food, and living quarters where our team of scientists and agricultural experts can rest. That said, constructing all of this will be a long-term effort, and it’s unlikely we’ll have everything completed before 2050

The Base camp location I'm doing is the "Artemis Base Camp" because it's near the lunar south pole, where it has areas with almost constant sunlight that could be used for sunlight, and it also gives access to water ice in shadowed craters. A habitable Lunar surface habitat would help give astronauts housing that would include life support, kitchens, exercise equipment, and areas for science experiments, basically making Earth-like housing but in space! Power systems would be needed as well because they'll provide high ridges of continuous energy, and machines that purify water from lunar ice would be useful too, which could help process future versions of lunar soil. Cargo delivery systems and moon buggies would be a must for the base to get equipment, data, or experiments around. Support systems like landing pads and storage units for food would be very helpful and needed for the base. Overall, these facilities, buildings, vehicles, and support systems would help. They would be built using lunar resources and would be transferred there with Earth delivery (pre-fabricated on Earth and unfolded and assembled on the moon). The Artemis base camp will be built in stages, and it'll take about 10 years or more for the base to be finished and completed. What I have learned is that there is a lot of thermal management for the desert and Arctic bases, their life support systems for underwater and Arctic stations, and also radiation protection for the underwater bases. The psychological and Social dynamics help show how to manage the crew's mental health, well-being, and social interactions while being in an isolated environment.

We are the Marfa Martians, and this is our second year participating in the Plant Mars project. Our group examined the soils of the Trans-Pecos region using the USDA Soil Taxonomy system and the Web Soil Survey (WSS). The data revealed that our area contains mainly mollisols, alfisols, and aridisols, all of which have a loamy texture that is more fertile than the sandy regolith found on Mars.

By exploring the soil maps and reports, we discovered that these local soils can support hardy desert plants like creosote bush, lechuguilla, ocotillo, and prickly pear. These plants have adapted to survive with little water and in harsh sunlight, which makes them interesting candidates for consideration in Martian agriculture.

Through this research, we gained insight into how Earth’s soil systems are classified and how they compare to extraterrestrial environments. This process also helped us think about which plants might have the resilience to withstand the challenges of growing beyond Earth.

Hello, this is our second year in the Plant Mars project. To begin our research, we used the U.S. Soil Taxonomy system and the Web Soil Survey to study the soils in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. The survey results showed that our area contains mainly mollisol, alfisol, and aridisol, which are classified as loamy soils.

Using the Web Soil Survey tools, we mapped our area of interest and reviewed the soil data, including properties, uses, and limitations. Compared to the sandy Martian regolith, our loamy soils are much richer and better at supporting life. This difference explains why plants such as yucca, mesquite, agave, sotol, and ocotillo are able to thrive here despite the desert conditions.

This research helped us understand how soil classification connects to real-world applications. It also showed us how plants that are already adapted to tough environments on Earth may one day become valuable candidates for growth in the extreme environment of Mars.

I'm coaching a team that's testing how plants grow in two different chambers—one with extra CO₂ and one with normal air—using both regular soil and lunar regolith. It's been so exciting to see the students come up with creative ideas, solve real science problems, and think about how we might grow food on the Moon one day. I'm really proud of how hard they’ve worked and how curious and determined they’ve been throughout the whole project.

We are testing whether plants can grow in simulated Martian regolith by planting tomatoes and dandelions in different mixtures of Mars regolith and Bio-Char. We chose these plants because they are hardy species that can tolerate harsh conditions. To help retain moisture around the roots, we added water crystals to all pots. Our experiment includes five soil compositions: 100% Mars regolith, 100% Bio-Char, 50% regolith and 50% Bio-Char, 60% regolith and 40% Bio-Char, and 80% regolith and 20% Bio-Char. We will observe germination, plant height, leaf growth, pH, and moisture levels to determine which soil combination provides the best conditions for plant survival in a Mars-like environment. Our hypothesis is that the 50/50 mixture of Mars regolith and Bio-Char will produce the healthiest plants because it offers a balanced mix of nutrients, structure, and moisture retention.

After careful thought, our group decided to plant lettuce as our crop. Lettuce normally takes about 30 days to grow, ensuring it will grow rapidly to feed astronauts. Another reason we picked lettuce is because it is a hardy plant that can survive in harsh conditions, which is perfect for surviving in a harsh environment like Mars.

The independent variable in our experiment is the soil amendment added to each pot of lettuce. The dusty soil from Mars lacks the nutrients lettuce needs to grow, so the addition of fertilizers introduces vital nutrition. The 4 fertilizers we will be testing are mycorrhizal inoculant, bone meal, coffee grounds, and biochar. The dependent variable will be the height of the lettuce leaves above the soil. The controls will be temperature, sunlight, soil composition, watering, and soil used.

We will have two experimental trials, which will have a vertical hydrogel layer either one inch or two inches away from our growth farm's frame. Through this setup, we aim to identify the optimal distance for effective root directionality and determine whether this method can help mitigate the effects of microgravity on the Moon.

This project explores how chickpeas (Cicer arietinum) can grow in Martian-like soil conditions. We used ten growth containers containing different mixtures of Earth soil and simulated Martian regolith such as 50% soil/50% regolith, 25% soil/75% regolith, and 100% regolith to test how these ratios affect germination, growth, and nitrogen fixation. Using a wick-based watering system and controlled light and temperature, we observed how the chickpeas and their symbiotic microbes, Mesorhizobium ciceri and Rhizophagus irregularis, would adapt to the nutrient-poor regolith. Our goal is to understand whether legume microbe partnerships could support sustainable plant growth on Mars.

We hoped to see a positive correlation between the addition of a nutrient solution and the growth and health of the plants so they would produce healthy, harvestable pods.

The Plant Mars experiment investigated how different soil compositions affected plant growth, focusing on tomatoes and dandelions grown in varying mixtures of Mars regolith and biochar. Although tomatoes and dandelions are considered companion plants, results showed that they performed best in different soil compositions, highlighting the importance of matching plant species to specific soil conditions. Overall, soils with higher proportions of Mars regolith supported better plant growth than soils with higher amounts of biochar. Key lessons learned included the importance of taking weekly growth photos, using consistent measurement techniques, and ensuring all team members were properly trained on equipment. These findings suggest that successful plant growth in Martian environments will require careful soil composition, planning, and watering techniques.

Team Name: Space-Fried Rice

Team #: 23556

Plant the Moon Challenge

This Red Rocks Community College 2025-26 Plant the Moon project explores rice plant growth with different proportions of lunar regolith, potting soil, and the effects of water sources on plant health. The lunar regolith was divided into three different growing media compositions: 100% lunar regolith, 100% potting soil, and a 50% mix between the two media. Each combination of growth medium was watered with one of two different water-nutrient mixtures: run-off water from an existing aquaponic system or distilled water with a 2.34% concentration of all-purpose liquid fertilizer. The combination of 100% lunar regolith and aquaponic water grew the tallest rice plants, supporting the original hypothesis of this experiment that paddy farming rice with lunar regolith and aquaponic water would in fact yield the highest growth.
