Some of the earliest uses of nursing simulation can be dated back to Florence Nightingale's time around 1874! Back then, they utilized static mannequins such as the "jointed skeleton." There is also documentation of pelvic models used to train midwives dating back to the late 1700s.

Those who believe in the effectiveness of simulation say it provides a safe environment to learn and make mistakes and create more confident and competent nurses, but not everyone agrees. Even with all of its advancements and successes, a gap still exists in proving that simulation makes a difference at patients’ bedsides. The discipline continues to struggle to produce concrete evidence of its effectiveness.

I myself can speak for one particular way that simulation can be used in distance learning. When I was enrolled in my ADN nursing program, we utilized an online simulation program known as shadowhealth. It is all online and really helps to improve nursing assessment skills.

I found two pretty impressive mobile apps on the apple app store. The first is known as "Full Code." It provides patient cases where you can visualize and assess a patient and actually click and maneuver around the patient's room. You are able to see vitals, select procedures, communicate with other departments, and even reach out to the physician to try to assess and treat different patient scenarios. It was by far the most complete app I found as a mobile simulation app. The other app I found was "Prognosis." This app provides a good learning experience as well, but it is not nearly as advanced as the full code app. It provides you with assessment information, test results, and cartoonish patient images as you swipe through the cases. You are then challenged to try to figure out what is actually going on with the patient based off the information you have been provided.

I chose to complete this assignment with Padlet. It provided different and unique presentation styles that are not available with Powerpoint. For someone who has utilized Powerpoint for every presentation I have ever put together, it was a bit different learning to navigate. While it was much different, I would not say it was overly challenging to figure out. As an added bonus, it tells you that you are beautiful on the homepage. (Insert informal "LOL")
