SYMBOLS
  •  The Boat - I think that the boat in The Odyssey represents Odyssey’s knowledge, and when it is destroyed by Poseidon, I think it shows a failing of his knowledge, or his knowledge is not strong enough. Another anilization for this symbol is that poseidon is trying to show, how Odysseus’s knowledge is stronger than Odysseus' Along with the boat’s scene, think of the water to symbolize the weakness of man VS. god. 
  • The caves are also another great example in the Odyssey. They represent the unconscious mind and nature, allowing you to learn more about the gods that live inside them, and more about yourself for applying it to different, and vast situations. Odysseus and his crew bring out the absolute worst in the gods that are living in the caves, this makes their true colors and personalities shine bright.
  • Another symbol I found important from The Odyssey was the ocean. Everytime that Odysseus goes across the ocean, his boat end up  getting tossed around. This shows a sign of weakness, and poseidon’s power.
PATTERNS

  1. The Monsters- The Nymphs, and the Cyclop are major patterns and symbols in The Odyssey. They represent different parts of Odysseus, now that I’ve noticed it. They all brought out similar and different characteristics of Odysseus.
  2.  In the book, one of the patterns that shows up is that the kings family was always feasting. Everytime that Odysseus’s crew showed up, the family was feasting.
  3. When ever Odysseus and his crew our out to sail on the boat, there is always some sort of battle with the crew men and a god or monster.

Pattern- They encounter a god then they encounter a monster and it keeps going.
Pattern- After every fight or problem Odysseus gets out of and succeeds he becomes more and more cautious .
Symbol-Caves represents Nature and unconscious.
Symbol- Robes represents a second chance for Odysseus.
Symbol-When Odysseus discovers Circe’s house it is a mix of a cave and a normal house which shows that instead of the unconscious mind he is transitioning into his conscious mind and is learning and changing
