People watching is the action or practice of spending time idly observing people in a public place (Oxford Languages). The song People Watching by Conan Gray demonstrates someone who has found comfort in people watching throughout their life, but longs for more. Written from the perspective of Conan Gray, he writes it for the dreamers of the world. He talks about how he feels like everyone else is in love and how he longs to feel the same way.

Speaker: Someone who always feels as though they are looking in from he outside, or only being witness to something they want to experience
Occasion: Conan Gray wrote this song after he watched this couple in a coffee shop for years on his campus at UCLA. He talked about how they always sat at this little corner of the shop and talked about their life. This really made Gray realize how much he felt like he was missing out on love.
Audience: The audience of this song is for people in love. Conan Gray writes this song for anyone in a healthy relationship to understand to not take what they have for granted. Gray explains that all he wants is to feel that type of way, so he wants to ensure that those who listen to the song understand what they have.
Purpose: This song's purpose was a composition of Gray's idea of love. This song encompasses everything that Gray sees love as and everything he wants it to be for him.
Subject: Loneliness and love
Tone: This song is very dreamy. Throughout the entire song, it is very easy to imagine yourself as one of the people in the relationship that Gray discusses. In the song, the beat is steady and quick, causing you to want more of the song just as though you may want more out of your life like Gray does.

Lyrics First Appeal: Pathos

The first instance of Pathos in the song People Watching comes in the chorus. Many times in the song Gray says "I wanna feel all that love and emotion". This sentence applies to pathos because of the raw emotion it will bring out of you. Gray chose those words because that is exactly how he feels. Conan Gray found no need to say anything besides exactly what needed to be said. Another ethos is when Gray says "They're having talks about their futures until 4 a.m. And I'm happy for them". This lyric really does make you happy for the couple that Gray is telling you about. The emotions that Gray feels throughout the song are really the emotions that you end up feeling as well because of the way the song is written.

Lyrics Second Appeal: Ethos

The instance of Ethos in the song People Watching comes when Conan Gray says "But I cut people off like tags on my clothing". This describes ethos because everyone has cut tags off of their clothing. Everyone who has bought clothes understands that it is second nature to cut off the tags, and no one really thinks much of it. This really makes listeners understand how Conan Gray handles the relationships (romantic and platonic) in his life. We understand that it is second nature to cut off is friends as soon as he can.

Overall, the song People Watching is a collection of memories and dreams from someone on the outside of a relationship looking in. Looking at the lyrics, Conan Gray is very effective into persuading the listen to feel what he is feeling.
