I had a specific situation that occurred not too long ago that I have a better understanding of because of her explanations. We hear the word rigor in education,  but Hammond says the actions in the brain and the person, the vital on-goings "behind the scenes" of learning. She wrote this book to tell educators of the prevailing injustice that students of color and lower-classes are not groomed enough through their education to be independent learners. She explains the case well. The book explains how to ready the brain and how educators can become more of "warm defenders" and allies to students who due to natural neurological/biological behaviors may  reject learning. Hammond's writings help educators ready the environment and themselves to do the work and stop "passing the buck."
