We found 4 cultural references. " I am the farmer bondsman to the soil" , "I am the worker sold to the machine", " I am the Negro, servant to you all." These quotes make references to tragic events that have occurred in America before such as slavery. This helps you understand the story more, because you see how the author feels about these situations and why he's so passionate about letting " America be America again."

Metaphors are figures of speeches which involve an implied comparison between two relatively unlike things. Metaphors compare and you can make connections that will help you gain a deeper understanding of the poem. Metaphors in poems are often used to help us readers understand the character and his point of view. "Equality is in the air we breathe" is a metaphor that helps us visualize that the united states supports equality but it's not in the air. The air and equality are unrelated but the author uses it for us anyways to have an understanding.
