I work for the East Gwillimbury Public Library as the Manager, Programs & Community Engagement. Soon I will be transitioning to a new role, Manager of Customer Experience. I have two children, ages 2.5 & 4.5, and I love spending my days with them. As a full time librarian and mother of two, I find life to be quite hectic these days. But in my spare time, I enjoy being by the lake, and I am very into weaving. I spend many of my cold, winter days weaving, reading and hanging out with family and friends. Recently, I implemented Nature Backpacks at our library and I loved working on this project.

I fall into the sensory/visual/active/sequential learning style. I have always been a visual learner, absorbing information and feelings from observing and touching. I find online learning a challenge to follow, and even printed out the notes from the course because I prefer to read and highlight what I need to do.

As a learner, I am motivated and thrive in a team. I find I get my best ideas talking with others, and what starts as something small, like a "imagine if we.." turns into the planning process. It is the bouncing of ideas that starts my gears. I learn best when the environment is clean and clear of clutter. I find when I am working in a messy workplace, I get sensory overload and have to walk away. I enjoy a quiet, clean area. I also use a salt lamp to create a tranquil environment and find this motivates me to learn.

I learn a lot through observation. To have a mentor in the workplace and be able to observe how to treat situations enables me to apply their techniques to my own job. And although this may sound negative, I also learn by making mistakes! If I make a mistake, I know not to make it again. Making mistakes allows me to be better at my job, even though it involves making the initial mistake, which never feels great.

My ideal mentor is someone who is skilled in managing people; I have a strong interest in human relationships, communication and interpersonal skills. I'd like to learn from someone who truly values their staff and offers support and incentives to motivate them. I think that empowering employees and cultivating relationships with each of them creates a sense of belonging, which is vital to a healthy life. This is an area I truly feel is rewarding, which is why I enjoy the management side of my role.

Preparing to Plan

1. What plan do you feel needs to be revisited or developed?
-Employee Recognition & Appreciation Strategy
2. Why?
-To have a guiding plan that encourages and enforces ongoing employee recognition and appreciation; to send a positive message to staff and new staff that this is important within our workplace
-A recent workplace satisfaction survey identified that this was an area of growth so we are acting
3. How does this plan align with or support the Library's mission and Vision?
-In order for EGPL to be successful in building community and fostering learning and discovery, our staff need to feel valued as individuals, motivated to provide excellent customer service to our community and to be appreciated for their skills and strenghts
4. Who needs to be involved in this plan?
-The plan will be developed by senior management, with the support of the CEO. The senior management team will consult with all departments and levels of staff to identify what staff recognition and appreciation look like. We would engage them in the process of creating the plan and hearing their opinions.
-The plan is ultimately implemented by the CEO, and overseen by senior management
