This amazing lady, herself a former Notre Dame pupil, had fought ill health for 8 years showing incredible and inspirational fortitude.  She was 84 years old and married for 61 years!

In the words of her daughter, who was with her when she went to meet her God:  "An absolute trouper and so courageous, one of that golden war generation."

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May she rest in peace. AMEN

St. Julie had her fair share of fearful experiences - remember the escape under cover of hay in a haycart from a mob who wanted to kill her? She says not to give way to fear; that the good God will give us strength!

Maybe this week, you can be the hands, mouth and ears of Jesus in supporting those around you who may be worried or fearful about a situation they're facing. Take courage, ask if they're OK. Sometimes, when we're bothered by things, we just need someone  to notice and we realise we are not alone.

Our mindset can very much influence what we experience.  If we go into lessons or meetings expecting them to be hard, the tendency is to notice the more difficult aspects.  If we go into lessons or meetings with a positive attitude that whatever happens, we'll be OK, the chances are that is how things will work out.

This week, St. Julie challenges us to look for evidence of the good God's love in all we see and do. God's love is shown through ourselves.  As St Theresa of Avila said "Christ has no hands on earth but ours".   That can help us focus on the goodness in other people and in ourselves. These are interesting words indeed but let's not confuse them with the idea that that we need do nothing and everything will work out OK in the end.  That idea would lead to complacency and is surely not what St. Julie meant.

For example, none of our Year 11s believe that they should not bother to do any revision and simply pray instead!  That's a recipe for disaster.  Now don't get me wrong - I'm not averse to praying and would encourage it.  However, we all know that revision is a vital part of success and God (and St. Julie as an excellent teacher) would expect us to work hard and do our best.

The key in allowing the good God to act in our lives is deciding what God really wants from us.  But then, it is up to us to put God's plan into action.  So, let's  allow the good God to move us, to motivate us , to strengthen us to take the appropriate course of action in life. 

Loving God, we pray that we will have open hearts that feel what you are calling us to do. Give us the strength to then put that calling into action so that we serve you with much liberty of spirit.

So, do you know a young carer?
  • What impact does it have on their life?
  • Are they getting the support they need?
  • Is there anything you can do to help?
  • Are you a young carer?
  • Should you share that with someone?


Loving God, we give thanks:
for all young people who take on caring roles; 
for their compassion which is such a profound expression of love;
that they will receive the support they need and deserve.

Help those around them to notice and appreciate what they do
and to offer encouragement and help in the challenges they face

This amazing woman of faith often talks of simplicity of heart. Having a simple heart is not a euphemism for not being very clever.  Having a simple heart is about being honest, faithful, straightforward and open. 

We've all been in the presence of people with simple hearts - they're the people who can be trusted, who won't let is down, in whom there is no subtle subtext or manipulation.  What you see is what you get!

So, this week, maybe we could ask ourselves:
  • Who are the people with simple hearts in our lives?
  • How can I show I appreciate their simplicity?
  • How simple-hearted, straightforward and honest am I?
  • In which areas of my life do I not really do my best?
  • How can I make doing my best an integral part of who I am?

This week's words from St. Julie indicate her deep faith.   She was obviously so much in tune with God that she could work out what the good God wanted her to do.

I'm guessing that most of us don't always know what the good God is showing us moment by moment. Certainly, very few of us have visions or hear the voice of God directly so just how do we know what the good God is showing us or challenging us to do?

Perhaps the good God shows us what to do through the words, actions and example of the people around us.  If we look for the goodness in them - each made in the image of God - then maybe that's where we find the goodness of God nudging us in the right direction.

Have a great week looking for the goodness in each other - not forgetting to let your own goodness shine forth for others!

St. Julie was no stranger to journeys!  In fact, after she was cured in 1804 of her debilitating paralysis which had left her bedridden and reliant on others for 22 years, she embarked on numerous journeys across France and what we now call Belgium.  
You can even see the coat she wore during those journeys at the Heritage Centre in Namur.  

It is clear that St. Julie felt the good God strengthening her as walked those roads and paths. 

She urges the early Sisters of Notre Dame to pray because  those early days were hard!  Life is still hard for so many and her words encourage us to pray.  

So the challenge this week is to give some headspace and time just to rest a little in God's presence.

And if you struggle with that, why not just give yourself a couple of minutes each day when you turn off and just be!

Those few minutes might just revive you as you journey, helping you to get things in perspective.

Maybe if we're quiet and listen, we might just hear St Julie nudging us and encouraging us along our right path.

Lord, forgive our reliance on goods 
which may have been produced unfairly
 at the expense of the poor.

 Forgive our lack our awareness of 
   ·   how our clothes are manufactured,
   ·   how our food is produced and
   ·   our mistaking unneeded goods for essentials.

Enter the silence of our hearts
 and lift them up with fresh understanding.

Help us to take the time to check things out 
and to make consumer choices 
based on information and compassion. Amen

It's an interesting quote and may well have come about because St. Julie spanned a change of century.  She lived when the 1700s became the 1800s!     (Your teachers have all had the same experience going from the 1900s to the 2000s!)

St. Julie did indeed need to show courage on a number of levels.  She must have been scared when a violent mob came to execute her but managed to escape by hiding in a haycart. That didn't stop her demonstrating her faith!   When the Bishop of Amiens made life very difficult for her and questioned her loyalty to God, she had to show courage in walking away!

So, once again, St. Julie's words are timeless!  Whenever we live, humans need courage if they are to make the hard decisions about issues they face.  It takes courage to make the RIGHT decision rather than the POPULAR decision.   

So, as a member of the Catholic learning community that is St. Julie's, take courage from knowing that the woman after whom we are named lived a life of courage and watches over us to pray for, protect and bless us!

Despite this upheaval, this event proved to be full of goodness for it was to Namur the Sisters of Notre Dame went - and from there all over the world.  Had they stayed - we may not have been here!

Timeless words again - this time about being brave - not foolhardy or reckless but brave.  i.e. Overcoming our fears as opposed to having no fears.  

Let's not forget that St. Julie lived with threats on her life, through the French Revolution and tended the sick at the Battle of Waterloo, so she must have experienced some incredibly frightening and distressing moments.

In this week, when we are focussing on our Mission Statement commitment to being a place of safety and security, let's support each other when the going gets tough or when hurdles seem insurmountable or when we're simply too frightened to push on through situations we're facing.

Lord Jesus, who encouraged Peter to get out of the boat and walk on water, be with us and walk with us as we encounter storms in life.

It's easy to be overwhelmed and maybe feel we're not making much progress.   St. Julie re-assures us that the growth and development will come in God's time.  As long as we do our best and have good, honest, simple motives - progress will come!

in the midst of our busy lives, may we not despair and give up;
help us to take opportunities to encourage each other.

May our thoughts and motives be simply to serve others well,

All too often we judge ourselves so harshly by what we can't do either because we haven't got enough time or maybe because we feel we haven't got the resources physically or mentally.

St. Julie is quite clear - rejoice in what you can do!  Celebrate those things and don't beat yourself up over the other stuff!  Do you best because that IS good enough!
