In general the guards stand watch to protect the castle and make sure no unwanted visitors make their way into or on the premises of the castle. However, Bernardo and Marcellus convince Horatio to stay longer than his shift because of the ghost they saw and they wanted to make sure it wasn't in their heads. When Horatio sees the ghost that looks like the late king that is when Bernardo and Marcellus know it wasn't in their head the entire time.

One of the noticeable conflicts that arises in the first scene of Hamlet is the issue of King Hamlet's ghost. He is clearly here for some reason, as most ghosts in literature (and even the rumors in real life) cannot leave due to "unfinished business." I imagine the ghost will become a larger conflict, maybe for Hamlet himself as that's most likely who the ghost is trying to contact. It would not make sense for the ghost to be contacting random guards.

There's two ways in which the ghost's presence can be read. One literal, and one metaphorical. If the ghosts are taken as being literal than it establishes the weight his father holds over him and sets up the motivation for the protagonist. However, if you read the ghosts as a figure of his imagination than it could hint at Hamlet possibly having genuine insanity.
