Mac started smoking marijuana regularly to cope with stress while on tour. Then he turned to other drugs to try to manage his mental state. Specifically, he used a mixed drug cocktail called “lean,” a combination of promethazine – an addictive sedative – and codeine – a schedule II narcotic found in cough medicine. His drug use started long before his music career. In addition to dealing drugs in high school, Mac Miller has told sources that he started using drugs at only 15 years old. He openly admitted that he used promethazine and cocaine in the years after his chart-topping debut album, Blue Slide Park. In a personal Youtube documentary that Mac released he talked about how marijuana was actually the gateway into his harder drug use: “I needed to get a drug that was a little more numbing, if you will… I think that’s what really sparked me doing other drugs, because I hate being sober. I wanted a drug to do.”

Mac Miller died from an accidental overdose on September 7, 2018, of cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol in his home at the age of 26. His death shocked those closest to him. He was in the best mental and physical condition he'd been in years when he passed away. Mac had been working with a sober trainer since 2016, and has been in L.A. working out at the gym almost every day. A guy named Stephen Walter was the one who sold Mac the drugs, Mac thought they were just normal opium but little did he know they were fentanyl laced and would be the thing to kill him. A federal judge sentenced Stephen Walter to 210 months, or 17.5 years in prison, according to documents in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Stephen who is 49, pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges last October for distributing fentanyl, which carries a minimum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. At that time, he had just agreed to the federal prosecutor's office about just doing 17 years. Judge Otis D. Wright II overturned that ruling, reported by Rolling Stones because the ruling fell below federal guidelines, prosecutors alleged that he continued to sell counterfeit drugs until he was arrested in 2019.

Mac Miller passed away on Friday, September 7th. He was 26 years old. Many of his friends, fellow rappers, and peers on the music scene have paid tribute to Miller on his social media and on stage. The inspiring message showcases Miller's radiant personality and far-reaching positive influence.
Chance the Rapper- "I dont know what to say," Chance wrote on Twitter. "Mac Miller took me on my second tour ever. But beyond helping me launch my career he was one of the sweetest guys I ever knew. Great man. I loved him for real. I'm completely broken. God bless him."

J. Cole- "If you don't feel right, if you feel you have a substance problem, if you need a ear to vent to. If you uncomfortable talking to people around you. Please reach out to me," Cole also dedicated his Las Vegas concert to Miller, delivering a stirring speech about addiction and trauma. Before performing "Love Yourz," he told the crowd to put their cellphone lights in the air for Miller.

Childish Gambino- "I'm a very sensitive person … but this Mac Miller s--- got me f---ed up," Gambino said. "He was so nice. He was the sweetest guy, he was so nice. And we were both internet music kids, and a lot of critics were like, 'This corny-ass white dude, this corny-ass black dude,' and we used to talk. And this kid, he just loved music." "And we should be allowed to be sad about it. Like my heart was broken. And I feel good about being sad, because it tells me that he was special," Gambino continued, dedicating his song "Riot" to Miller.

Why would your celebrity, who was adored by millions, ever decide to use drugs?
Mac Miller's death shows that drug and alcohol abuse transcends wealth, socioeconomic status and nearly every barrier. There is no social or geographic region in the United States that is less susceptible or immune to this problem. For those of us who don't believe it can happen to those around us, let this act as a wake-up call that it certainly can. People use drugs to cope because they don't know how else to do it.
What changes would you have made in your celebrity's life to make their life healthier both physically and mentally?
There's no way to change a person's life, but if Mac wouldn't have gotten into drugs and just stayed out of trouble he would have been way happier.
How might these changes have impacted your celebrity's future?
He would have lived longer, wouldn't have been broken up with, overall just lived a better life.
