PAINTING AS A FINE ART

Painting, according to Gilson and Denis, is defined as a solid surface that is covered by colors with an arrangement that is pleasing to the eye through the unity of form, the harmony of parts, and the perfection of the execution. It is not like other forms of fine arts, because painting does not have any utilitarian aspect in contrast to architecture, nor does it extend its form from two dimensions in contrast to sculpture. Yet, it contributes to the beauty that man constantly searches for which is in every form of fine arts. Through only a flat surface and with the artist's chosen material, he can create an image of landscape, portrait, still life, etc. Although painting is only limited to two dimensions, the artist can make an illusion of depth through arranging the image's lines, colors, and values. It can also be seen that man tries to reinterpret reality by imitating the natural world in an abstract way. Man reflects the physical world and his inner world by reaching his Creator himself through imitating what He has created. The artist can also alter the reality in which he experiences in nature in his painting by changing the colors and values that have never been used in painting an object to create meaning. For example, paintings in the Renaissance are used as a tool to teach the masses about philosophy. There's meaning in every stroke, material, and the colors that are used by the artists at this time. In short, painting as a fine art contributes to man's reflection of the physical world and his inner world because of the meaning that is brought out from the painting through the arrangement of the elements.

“Isang Sakong Bigas ni Atlas” is a work that’s been painted by Elmer Borlongan. His choice of subjects and themes is attuned to the day-to-day struggles of the Filipino working class. His paintings are known to invoke empathy and represent resilience through economic hardships (Pinto, 2019). Because of the artist’s background, it can be assumed that the painting shows a hardworking Filipino farmer who's been dehumanized by economic deprivation and the inequality that is present in the society. The lines through his thin body and his overly aged face are proof. The lines are jagged and mechanical on Atlas' face, his hands and the cloth surrounding his head, meaning the artist drew this with rigid control with the purpose of showing anxiety and turmoil. On the other hand, the lines on his body are continuous and thin lines, meaning that the artist would want to lead the viewer’s eyes to the parts where the lines are jagged and mechanical. There is a repetition of the color brown, a color that is usually associated with earth. Found in the background and foreground, the brown colors create harmony in the painting. The brown on the background is a yellowish shade of brown that gives contrast to the foreground. It also seems that Atlas is in an open space, and the illusion of depth, that is made possible in two-dimensions, is created through the shadows on his arms, face and the sack he is holding. The highest value in the painting is the sack that Atlas is carrying followed by Atlas' eyes, while the lowest value is the cloth that is around the head of Atlas. There is a lot of focus on the face of Atlas, especially his eyes, because of the jagged lines and the mixture of the lowest value and the highest value of colors that surrounds it. It shows how old he is because of his wrinkles on his face. His eyes show how tired he is because of his dark eye bags. His eyes also seem to communicate to the audience of his turmoil because of its high values. The lines on his body are not only continuous but it creates a narrow space on his body signifying that his body lacks in nutrients. That is how this painting shows how Atlas was dehumanized from the hardships in life.
