In the story Girl by Jamaica Kincaid, the mother and daughter relationship is strict, with the mother giving constant instractions to prepare her daughter for adult life.

1.) The main characters from the story I've read was the Mother and her daughter while the side characters was a boy and other woman.

2.) In "Girl," the relationship between the mother and child is one of authoritative guidance as well as concern. There is a series of orders from the mother which mirror societal expectations for women, these put pressure on the daughter to conform. This makes the mother's counsel seem to originate from love and a desire for her daughter's well-being, but there is a pull that develops as the girl remains silent, thereby showing anger and fight for self-autonomy. Overall, their relationship illustrates the pull between tradition and the desire for individualism.

3.) If I had received such commands as in "Girl," I would create a desire for independence and self-expression. Though I would appreciate the mother's intentions and care, the overwhelming nature of her advice would create a complex emotional experience, balancing respect for tradition with a longing for personal freedom.

4.) For me yes, the tone and mood of a person considerably influence his relationships. Warm tones create connections, and hostile tones create conflict. Mood influences perception; positive moods encourage openness, and negative moods may even lead to withdrawal. Overall, both tone and mood shape interactions and the quality of relationships.

5.) Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl" is a commentary on the persistent gender roles and social expectations in the long, lecturing lines of a mother to her daughter. It implies force or pressure to conform to female duties and hints at a struggle of the daughter with these norms, showing continuous talks about gender equality.

1. The mother and her daughter are the story's main protagonists. Their bond as mother and daughter is complicated.

2. The narrative illustrates the intricate bond between mother and daughter while drawing attention to the social and generational constraints placed on young women, particularly in a Caribbean cultural context. The tale revolves around the mother-daughter relationship, which Kincaid uses as a prism to examine issues of uniqueness, obedience, and identity.

3. I would be under a lot of strain and be perplexed if I were given the same instructions by my mother. I'll struggle to meet my mother's cultural expectations and experience pressure and disappointment.

4. Yes, because they affect how other people interpret our words and deeds, tone and mood play a critical role in forming our relationships. While a negative attitude can cause tension and distance, which lowers the quality of our relationships, a positive tone promotes openness and trust.

5. By depicting the demands made on women to adhere to social norms, the text "Girl" captures the enduring reality of gender roles, tradition, and social expectations. The mother's extensive list of rules for how to act and carry out her responsibilities reflects the continued pressure on women to maintain traditional roles in behavior, appearance, and domestic life, demonstrating how deeply embedded and significant these norms are across all cultures and gene

rations.

1.) The story centers around a mother and her daughter

side character:

-the baker and the preacher. The mother mentions them to remind her daughter of society’s expectations and the importance of good behavior in public.

2.) The relationship between the mother and daughter is filled with both love and tension. The mother clearly wants her daughter to be successful and respected, but her strict, almost relentless advice comes across as controlling. The daughter’s short responses show that she feels pressured and maybe even frustrated, hinting at her desire to find her own way rather than just follow her mother’s strict rules.

3.) If I were in the daughter’s position, I would likely feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of advice and commands. It would feel like my choices and opinions didn’t matter, and I might start feeling resentful or wanting more freedom to make my own mistakes. I’d appreciate my mother’s care, but I’d wish she trusted me more.

4.) Yes, tone has a huge impact on relationships. In this story, the mother’s harsh, commanding tone creates a sense of pressure and distance between her and her daughter. If the mother spoke in a more encouraging and understanding way, the daughter might feel more open and comfortable around her, making it easier for them to connect and understand each other.

5.)“Girl” reflects the way traditional gender roles and social expectations still shape people’s lives, especially within families. The mother’s focus on teaching her daughter to be a “proper” woman highlights the pressure on women to meet certain standards—managing the home, behaving modestly, and avoiding shame. Although society has changed in many ways, people, especially women, still face expectations that can feel limiting, showing how deep-rooted these beliefs can be.

1. The story features two main characters: a mother and her daughter. The mother is the dominant voice, delivering a monologue of commands and instructions to the daughter, who only speaks twice.

2. The relationship between the mother and daughter is somewhat authoritarian and tense. The mother instructs the daughter on how to behave, particularly regarding domestic tasks and social expectations, reflecting both concern and a strict desire to control. Her tone suggests she worries the daughter might stray from what she considers a “proper” path, which leads her to issue a continuous stream of directives.

3. If these commands were directed toward me, I might feel overwhelmed, restricted, or even frustrated. The constant, prescriptive instructions could feel like an invasion of personal space and autonomy, making me feel pressured to meet someone else’s standards rather than form my own identity.

4. Yes, the tone and mood of a person can significantly impact relationships. In this story, the mother's critical and demanding tone creates a distance between her and her daughter. Her approach may feel less nurturing and more oppressive, potentially leading the daughter to feel misunderstood or resentful, rather than supported.

5. The text highlights the societal expectations imposed on women, especially in traditional and patriarchal cultures. The mother’s commands reflect strict gender roles that require women to excel in domestic duties, behave with modesty, and maintain a certain social image. This mirrors ongoing issues today, where women often face societal pressure to conform to specific roles and expectations around appearance, behavior, and responsibilities. The story critiques how these expectations can limit individuality and perpetuate traditional roles across generations.

1. The mother and her daughter are the two significant characters in Girl. In this aspect, the mother is authoritative and prescriptive since she provides her daughter with a long list of commands and expectations. Conversely, the daughter mostly keeps silent but sometimes responds in a defensive manner to show her perspectives slightly.

2. The relationship is that of authority and control between a mother and her daughter. Here, the mother talks instructively, almost reprimand-like, concerning the daughter's activities, reputation, and how she would be seen or perceived in the future. This is an intense relationship since the mother focuses on training her daughter to become the "proper" woman to be according to the definitions of society and culture. The rare responses of the daughter constitute a mix of respect and resistance and a yearning to express her individualism.

3. If these orders are addressed to me, then I would feel like drowning, being restricted and confined, and even get angry at the lack of my freedom to choose things to do or not do them personally. The continued issuing of orders may provoke in me a feeling of helplessness and rebellion, especially when personal identity or views are thrown into the wind.

4. Yes, the tone and mood do affect relationships to a great extent. In the case of Girl, it is a commanding tone, critical, which, I believe, creates space and tension and a kind of mutual understanding that leaves the other person feeling evaluated or belittled, but a supportive and understanding tone brings people closer, engenders trust, and ensures openness.

5. Girl symbolizes the perpetuation of traditional gender roles, especially how women are expected to be, in terms of a standard, tradition, and behavior. Many societies continue to place these standards on women, dictating what is "acceptable" femininity and behavior. The mother's words are the expectations of society, which tend to narrow down women's roles and sometimes place them in molds rather than giving them choices and freedom.

1. The characters in the story "Girl" are the mother and her child.

2. The mother provides her child with long list of instructions with a mix of harshness and practicality, however, there is an undercurrent of care for her child reflecting her concern for her child's future. Thus, I would say that they have a complex relationship.

3. If these commands were given to me, I would feel a little overwhelmed, as I notice in the story how much a girl need to be just to be accepted in this society. Additionally, I would also feel like my life is controlled by someone else, but there would also be a sense of care and love, because I know that my mother is doing this for my own good.

4. Yes, I strongly believe that the tone and mood greatly affects relationships with others, as it can reflect your true emotions and feelings. People might perceive your words in a different way depending on your tone and mood. If you show an aggressive tone, this can create tension, and otherwise if you speak with a calm tone.

5. The story showed the modern reality, where women, especially in families are expected to behave. I noticed in the story that if you're a woman in a family, you are expected to do all the chores and follow traditional roles. This shows how much a woman is being limited to showing her full potential and not reaching the society's expectations due to risk of judgement, which promotes gender inequality and limits fairness in our society.

The characters in the story include the mother and her daughter.

Just like any other mother and daughter relationship found in the modern day, the mother is always wary, commanding, and strict, whereas her daughter just has to follow these commands as her duty as she cannot disagree and show an act of disrespectfulness with her mother. These traits of the mother are showcasing her love and care for her daughter. Her words, however, can come off as controlling and too obnoxious for her child which can create a harsh environment for the child who is simply growing up, such as the pressure and worry the child would feel due to the peer pressure from the expectations from the mother.

If these commands were given to me I would not be able to take it anymore. As days and days would pass, I would be worried about the simplest mistake that I made, would make, and has made. As a child, I know for a fact that this environment the mother is creating would lead me to negativity rather than enjoyment as It would make me doubt myself even more as days passes by. With this relationship, I can see myself slowly losing my love for my mother. The love is still there, but it would be faint due to the injury that the situation would cause.

I believe that the tone and mood of a person does affect a relationship with other people as they can be greatly misunderstood, which can lead to more negativity around, and unpleasant feelings are developed. However, I do believe that this negativity can be surpassed through communicating our own emotions with other people in order for them to understand us without further misinterpreting it.

The text reflects the reality we have today based on gender roles, tradition, and social expectation by being able to show how the mother has a lot of comments towards the tradition as well as the relation of social expectation through her words. As a woman, the mother is able to fulfill her duty; be a mother, whereas the dad is nowhere to be found, reflecting the reality of our gender roles as well. The text fully explained how in our life, the environment created around us can greatly affect who and what we become as we grow older.

JOHN MARKY B. HEMPISAO

1. Who are the characters in the story?

 - The mother and her young daughter are the main characters. While the daughter occasionally responds, the mother is the main voice, giving instructions on appropriate behavior.

2. Describe the relationship of the mother and her child.

 - The relationship between them shows how her mother gives strict advice and guidance to her child. Their relationship revolves on authority, with the mother often prioritizing obedience over warmth. Despite her stern tone, she shows concern for her daughter, wanting her to succeed and avoid criticism. Even though she's strict, the mother cares for her daughter and wants her to do really well.

3. How would you feel if these commands were given to you?

 - I may feel overwhelmed and pressured by her constant, strict command. I would feel frustrated and confused, it would feel like my own mother doesn’t trust me to make my own choices. Yet, beneath it all, I would probably still sense her concern and feel a responsibility to meet her expectations.

4. Do you think that the tone and mood of a person greatly affects relationships with other people?

 - Yes, tone and mood can definitely affect relationships. The mother's tone is often harsh or critical, which could create a distance between her daughter. A harsh tone can create tension and resentment, while a supportive tone can build trust and understanding in relationships.

5. How does the text reflect the reality we have today based on gender roles, tradition, and social expectations?

 - In the poem "Girl" it shows how traditional gender roles still shapes behavior and identity. The mother’s advice shows a culture where women are expected to act, look, and handle household tasks in certain ways. Even though some expectations have changed, society still pressures people to fit into gender roles, affecting women and girls by pushing them to meet these standards.

1. The story is about a daughter and her mother, who gives her instructions on how to act as a young woman as she grows up.

2. Their relationship seems a bit tense, but deep down, it shows a mother’s love, as she wants to teach her daughter things society will expect from her. However, the way the mother speaks can feel overwhelming and a bit harsh. It also shows how the mother forcefully shapes the daughter's life.

3. If I were given these instructions, I would feel pressured by the expectations. I’m grateful for my mother’s advice, but I’d like to have the freedom to decide for myself and learn it by myself. And my mother should not make me feel forced to follow all the norms for women.

4. I think a person’s tone and mood affect relationships. The mother’s tone creates tension, possibly making the girl feel confused, angry, or belittled. The tone and mood really helps in sharing the message and emotions intended.

The story mirrors today’s reality, where there are still norms dictating how women should behave. Society places many expectations on women, shaping them in ways that often involve following restrictive and somewhat harmful norms.

1. The mother and her daughter are the story's two main protagonists.

2. Both love and conflict are there in their relationship. The mother is trying to compel her daughter to succeed in a forceful manner since she is strict and keeps giving her lists of directions. Ultimately, the mother continues to provide her daughter love and care. It demonstrates the intricacy of familial relationships.

3. Since I can see that the girl works hard to follow her mother and to be recognized and liked by society, I would feel overpowered if I were given these orders. Furthermore, I would get a sense of being controlled by others. Feeling like I'm not permitted to do the things I want to do is unacceptable to me since it would make me feel like I can't accomplish my objectives.

4. I firmly think that relationships with other people are impacted by tone and mood. It has a big impact on how we feel and behave toward other people. How we communicate with others depends on our attitude and tone. The environment will be relaxed and comfortable if you interact with people in a calm manner. On the other hand, if you speak aggressively, it will cause stress in the relationships.

5. The narrative depicted the modern world in which people of different genders are required to behave in ways that conform to social norms. In the article, I observed that women are expected to perform all household duties and other traditional responsibilities because it is what people expect of them. This demonstrates how a woman's entire potential is restricted and her failure to meet societal norms stems from the criticism of others around her. This demonstrates gender disparity and how unjust the world is to different genders.

1. The main characters that are mentioned in the story is the Daughter and her Mom. The mom is the dominant speaker in the story. Other characters such as boys, Baker, and other girls are also mentioned.

2. In the "Girl" They have a very complicated relationship where the mother instructs the daughter in a very strict manner that I think is very constricting for the girl to obey, it may be due to the social expectations to womanhood.

3. If these commands were given to me, I would feel constricted and pressured because these kinds of commands are not really necessary and are only affected by social norms. Some might be rebellious if they were to be commanded such commands.

4. Yes!, tone and mood play a significant role in shaping relationships. In "Girl," the mother’s stern, critical tone creates an atmosphere of pressure and expectation, which could affect how her daughter perceives her, potentially leading to tension or misunderstandings. When communication is harsh or judgmental, it may cause the daughter to feel undervalued and pressured

5."Girl" reflects gender roles, tradition, and societal expectations, especially around how women are expected to behave. The mother’s advice reinforces traditional expectations for women to be domestic, chaste, and polite. This portrayal of societal norms continues to resonate today in cultures that uphold similar standards, often affecting women's independence and self-expression.

1. The mother and the daughter are the major characters of this novel. Therefore, throughout the novel, the voice of authority is the mother, as she gives instructions, advice, and warnings to the daughter. She only talks twice to defend herself. The novel has no named characters at any point, which reinforces the universality of the novel.

2. The mother is rigid, didactic, and intent upon her daughter conforming to what is expected of women in their culture. Much of the time, the tone of the mother is stern, revealing her apprehension about the future held for her daughter. This relationship suggests power dynamics in which the mother is still in control, and the daughter has little room for personal expression or questioning of the norms being imposed.

3. As such demands have been cast upon me, I tend to feel constricted or limited and frustrated sometimes. Imperatives and expectations will create more pressure to meet up some standard set that allows freedom and individuality in absolutely no way. And in this case, perhaps maybe even more to rebellion to the want of separation in such stiff sets of expectations.

4. Yes, the mood and tone of a person greatly shape relationships. In "Girl, "the authoritative and critical tone of the mother has been laced with distance and tension between her and her daughter. A harsh or judgmental tone is inclined to erect barriers and provoke resentment in someone whom a gentle and tolerant tone might encourage to become open and communicative.

5. It is a reflection of today's realities where the societal gender roles and expectations do not stop influencing the lives of people, especially women. It shows how the expectation of society confines women in specific roles, such as doing home chores and maintaining a correct appearance.

The story depicted a modern world in which women, particularly in families, are expected to behave. I noted in the story that if you are a woman in a family, you are expected to handle all of the housework and conform to traditional gender stereotypes. This demonstrates how much a woman is constrained in exhibiting her full potential and not meeting society's expectations due to the risk of being judged, which fosters gender inequity and hinders fairness in society.
