The “Queen’s guards“ are responsible for guarding Buckingham Palace and are known to stay straight-faced all day. They usually don’t smile or laugh to show their seriousness. This is why a lot of tourists love provoking them by trying everything from singing, to dancing to telling jokes.

One reason why there are so many people from different countries in London is this: In 1948, Britain gave all people from former British colonies the right to have British citizenship. But when they moved to London, there was a lot of racism and discrimination against them. This is why often people from one ethnic group are concentrated in one borough: to protect themselves against discrimination and to help each other.

here is some information for you:
You have already learned about some popular places in London. Another famous spot is 221B Baker Street. You might have heard of the great detective Sherlock Holmes before. The great invention of the Scottish doctor and writer Sir Conan Arthur Doyle (1859-1930). In the Sherlock Holmes series, the London detective Sherlock Holmes and his companion, Dr. Watson, solve crime mysteries.
The stories have been made into movies with Robert Downey Jr. (who also played Iron Man) or into a BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch (who is also known for playing Dr Strange).
The original detective stories were written in the 1880s. However, they are still very popular.
