Square Pair Activity – Revised Steps

First, the discussion begins with students working in pairs.
After 5 minutes (time allotment may vary depending on the depth of discussion or teacher discretion),
Each pair then joins another pair to form a group of four—hence the name Square Pair.
These groups exchange ideas and insights from their initial pair discussions.
This activity maximizes participation and, most importantly, allows everyone to actively engage in meaningful conversation.

Exhibit – Gallery Walk Activity

First, group students into teams of 3–4 members (depending on class size). Each group will discuss their assigned topic or respond to the given question.
After the discussion, groups will exhibit or post their output on their designated wall space. Students will then participate in a gallery walk, visiting the exhibits created by other groups.
Each group will rotate, taking turns to view the exhibits of their peers.
One member from each group will remain stationed at their exhibit, ready to engage with visiting students and answer questions about their group’s output.

1. Choose a few students to come to the centre of the class to discuss a topic or text, give them an explicit criterion so they know what they should cover. I always ask them to ask each other questions to develop discussion, for example "You mentioned this earlier, can you explain/elaborate, what you meant?"

2. The duration of the conversation is no more than 5/6 minutes (in the beginning, this can feel long as they are not used to it.)

3. The rest of the students should be given instructions to carefully listen and then during feedback offer their observations on who said what and why it was interesting, how might the understanding of a particular topic may have grown from the conversation.

Having done this a few times, I have found that students get more confident in offering their ideas and developing them together.

It effectively covers verbalising ideas and listening intently to gain understanding.

Fishbowl Discussion

I usually use this activity when we are discussing specific themes that emerge from our literary work.

Students sit in an inner circle to discuss a theme while others listen and take notes. Then they swap roles. The idea is to practice sustained discussion and listening, while learning to build on others’ ideas.

Hot Seat

I use this one when we want to practice quick interactions also based on the book we are reading. One student takes the role of a character (real or fictional) and others ask questions. The idea is to deepen empathy, practice spontaneous questioning and answering.
