1.) I didn't see any stereotypes specifically directed at the author. I guess a stereotype that could be perceived toward him is that he is a refugee fleeing the Middle East.
2.) You can ask him about his story and what his life was like before he left his country.
3.) We can simply be there for them and treat them like they are human beings.
4.) Not exactly. I haven't been through a traumatic experience like he has. He is also a Civil Engineer student, which I am not. He resettled his life in a new country, which is not something I have done, either. I have never been to any of the countries he has been to, either. But I do know what it feels like to not know the future of a loved one's fate. So I guess we have that in common.
5.) I wouldn't know how to respond to some things because I can't imagine what it's like to go through such an intense thing as nearly losing your life and your entire families' lives, and only to be placed in a new country where you might have culture shock. He seems brave and optimistic about it so I might encourage him to keep his hopes up.

1. That all black people like chicken.
2. Chickens are easy to raise and many people around the world eat chicken, yum. We can correct these by teaching about how certain crops grow in different climates. Also about subsistence farming and technological advances that allowed for cross cultural exchange, etc. etc.
3. I can not relate exactly to what she is going through, but would find ways she could navigate through this without being victimized.
4. No I do not relate.
5. As a teacher I would want to become aware of this situation and address it. Notate it. Educate those involved and look for progress.

1. I am not sure about stereotype but there is the cultural idea that girls are not safe from boys, no matter where they are. I hesitate to put it but maybe the stereotype that boys are predatory?
2. I think correcting this is not something easy. Maybe explicitly teaching all people (children and students included) how to treat other people. Teaching people that no means no and that certain actions are not appropriate when expressing romantic feelings toward a person.
3. Sharing personal experiences that are similar.
4. I honestly related a lot with this story. I experienced a similar thing when I was in school and had my first job.
5. I think that having someone listen and believe her story is important and teaching her that she did not do anything wrong in order to cause this person to follow and harass her.

1) D's story falls into the stereotype that the person being abused won't leave their abuser because of a child is at the heart of the situation.
2) By having more information on the situation before coming to conclusions.
3) A teacher can hand out a questionnaire that seeks to identify at risk students, then the teacher can meet privately, or in groups, with students they are worried about.
4) Members of our groups related to D's story as we have seen people fall into the same patterns of accepting abuse.
5) Creating an atmosphere of safety at school so that students are comfortable approaching you and discussing the situations they are facing.

1. Some stereotypes found in the story is that black people like KFC and that having nicknames of "Black Momma" is okay.
2. We can correct these stereotypes by addressing the class about classroom behavior.
3. We can show popular people that have come from Jamaica and how they have become successful. Primarily to show them that being from another place is not bad or make them less than anyone else.
4. Yes, we feel like many people can relate to these characters. We have been put in the situation to question should we step in and do something or about it to help stop the bullying.
5. We would pull out the students individually to talk with them F2F about the situation and how we are going to be handling this as a class to resolve the bullying problem.

Include Children's Day in your classroom to make Taylor feel inclusive in holidays.
3.
