Stephen the Third (born 1438-1439, Borzeşti - July 2, 1504, Suceava), named Stephen the Great or, after his canonization by the Romanian Orthodox Church, Stephen the Great and the Holy, was the Moldavian prince between the years 1457 and 1504. He was the son of Bogdan II, reigning for 47 years, the longest reign of medieval times in the Romanian Lands.

Stefan cel Mare is considered to be a distinguished personality of the history of Romania, endowed with great qualities by a state man, diplomat and military leader. These qualities allowed him to go well over the moments of major crisis generated by either the military interventions of neighboring states or by attempts, from within or supported from outside the country, to his removal from the throne. During his reign, Moldova reaches the climax of its state development, knowing a long period of internal stability, economic prosperity and social peace.

He internally based his regime on a new ruling class made up of people mostly from the little boyars, raised to dignities on the basis of military merit, loyalty to the gentleman, or close friendship with him. He also greatly supported the development of the rape by collective appropriation of the wrestling communities, especially after the wars and battles waged, which assured him the loyalty of this class, the social silence in the country, and the human strength to have a mass army - the big one ".

On the outside, he managed to lead a realistic policy with two great guidelines: imposing or supporting favorable leaders in the small neighboring countries - Wallachia and the Crimean Hanat - and an alliance policy that would not allow any of the major neighboring countries - the Empire Ottoman, the Kingdom of Poland and the Kingdom of Hungary to obtain a hegemonic position towards Moldova. He tried unsuccessfully to establish a system of international alliances against the Turks, sending messengers to the Pope of Rome, Venice, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Persia.
