Response to Intervention (RtI) is a multi-tiered approach to early intervention for students with behavioral and learning disabilities. Many educators are looking for the best ways to help their students grow, but do not understand all of the legal implications in the programs students are entered into. RtI serves as an opportunity to build targeted intervention and help close the gap or identify areas that may require further testing.

RtI is a major focus on my campus and throughout my current district. I have worked with my CIS to determine the best steps for my struggling students over the last seven years. In this time guidelines from the district have changed and a greater desire to fully understand RtI and IDEA have surfaced.
When I step into the CIS position I want to be able to guide teachers and parents the best way possible. To do this I have to understand the legal aspects of the programs we use to ensure success of our students.

Covid-19 left many of our students out of the classroom and without formal instruction for six or more months. Teachers and parents are now concerned that the gaps created will continue to grow and are struggling to find the means to resolve the problem. With Tier I of the RtI process teachers will be able to determine gaps in the students understanding and work to provide target standard based interventions. This will help reduce the number of students being placed into tier II and III of the RtI process. Decreasing the chances of unnecessary testing for students.

They also noted that the student entered the RtI program on grade level and fell below grade level while in Tier I RtI interventions.
-The court found that the standard for child-find is not whether the school is certain that a child has a disability, it is just whether there are reasonable grounds for concern of a reading disability. That standard was met in the instance of this case.
-The courts ordered the district to pay for the tuition costs needed for K.M. to be provided adequate intervention at a private school.

* RtI is a research-based multi-tiered approach to academic and behavioral interventions.
* RtI was implemented under IDEA in 2004. Though RtI falls under a Federal Act it is not federally mandated to be used in schools.
* RtI is a data driven stepping stone that aims to identify and support a students academic and behavioral needs before they become serious.
* RtI is data-based and helps provide proper intervention to students. Those who are not successful in Tier I intervention more up through the tiers and are identified for possible additional testing.
*Teachers record notes on student performance throughout the tiered intervention to determine if the child is making progress towards their individual goals or if another form of intervention needs to take place.
* Under IDEA parents have the right to be informed. School districts have a time line in which parents must be notified of testing and results.
