Job fairs allow students to make connections with people in that industry, as well as allow students a chance to see what kinds of jobs there are that they may not have thought of. I like this clip because it talks with one of the people running the fair and a woman who is clearly trying to find a job but "can't sit at home and go 'Oh there's probably nothing there for me.'"

This clip shows a bit of the mentorship that a software company has put together in order to get high school students thinking about the software industry, as well as give them insight from people who are currently working in the field. The interview is with a student in the program and a woman who is a mentor. Both sides are represented, the mentor stating that, "...it can be very reassuring for a student to have a mentor who can tell them about that industry and help them make that bridge," and "...we need to close that gap between the education and the workplace." The student states that the best advice he got from his mentor was "It's about enjoying the job. And if you enjoy the job, it's not defined as a job anymore, it becomes a hobby." Giving students insight into the career as well as people to talk to about the industry and career are vital to their understanding--experience precedes interest.

The instructions about applying are not necessarily applicable to all students, but the advice for job shadows and internships would be helpful, as well as the information from students about their personal experience. Getting the firsthand experiences from students their age can help students viewing the clip realize that job shadows and internships are not necessarily for people who already know what they want to do, but should be used as a way to try out a career/job before they jump in and/or train for a career they will not enjoy. "If you're sort of interested in something do an internship. See if it's what you actually want to do in the future, and if not, you don't have to look into it. It's not a big thing." I couldn't have said it better myself.

This Ted Talk involves a man who realized in his mid twenties what career path he best fit into after taking a career interest survey. He the. Began to counsel employees of his company to do the same, to be intrinsically motivated to do their desired jobs well. Ed then decides to take this farther and has opened up a center for kids in the San Diego are to explore careers that they may never have thought of before. Dr. Simonsen explained in her presentation that many students go into a field based off of what they know (Rural students may go into the agricultural field). This gives students the opportunity to discover something they may never have thought of before.

As a Special Education Teacher in the cyber school setting, personal interaction takes on a new meaning. While social skills training and modeling through video are essential for cyber school students, especially those with communication in social interaction needs, creating an authentic situation can prove to be most beneficial. Dr. Simonsen noted that Career Preparation involves students learning specific skills for career engagement. The video clip explains how a Virtual Interactive Training Agent through the Inclusive Transition and Employment Management Program creates that authentic experience for students, in particular those with Autism, to practice interview skills. Students interact with the 'avatars' in an interview setting. Chapter 1 of The Way to Work details quality work experiences such as Internships, Apprenticeships, and Paid Employment. It is important to remember that for most employers, a job interview is the element that can secure a position for the person applying to the job. For students with communication needs or anxiety, this could pose as a stumbling block before even reaching the employment stage. Page seventeen of The Way to Work notes that "Students must know what is expected of them, how they are expected to behave on the job, and general and specific workplace guidelines" (Luecking, 2009) At about 2:09 in the video, the simulator details job requirements to the student and asks if they like working independently. This not only helps the student anticipate questions asked, but also encourage their critical thinking and creation of developed responses. For us teachers, this also adds creativity to our lesson plans and engagement for our students!

As I was searching for Career Awareness opportunities in my state of Pennsylvania, I came upon a program that I was unfamiliar with, but what appears to be an enriching experience for high school students as they explore career paths. The Career Reality Experience is a five day summer program for 11th and 12th grade students in Atlanta High Schools. Students are given the opportunity to explore careers that match their strengths and interests. They learn about careers that interest them and actually explore various jobs. Students meet with professionals and are given the opportunity to shadow them and gain a sense of the work environment. One student commented that the program gave her an idea of not only what she wants to do when she grows up, but different careers that are out there and possible career paths that she was not aware of. Students noted that by actually visiting a career and observing day to day interactions, they gained a different perspective of what they thought the job entailed. Table 1.2 on page 13 of The Way to Work lists and details Types of Work Experiences. This program embodies a useful Career Exploration and Job Shadowing approach. Students can visit and meet with employers, observe daily work duties, and discuss what they saw and learned.
One student who was part of the program offered advice that I hope to instill in my students: "Do what you love, work hard, be passionate, be you."

After the student completes the interest survey, they are matched to occupations that suit their personality and interests. That matching occupations list is separated by how much preparation you need for each job. Students can view knowledge and skills needed for the job, tasks and activities about the job, and wages for each state specific to that career. Students are not limited to one career, but can see related occupations and college majors as well based upon their reported interests.
