A basic core belief I have of students and their ability to achieve is that all students have the ability to be successful when given the right resources, skills, and knowledge. Every student learns in a different way we need to be flexible and adaptable. All students want to learn and learning is a lifelong process. A school counselor’s role as an advocate for every student is to ensure students have what they need to learn successfully. Being an advocate for students means always pushing for the best care opportunities and education for all students and fighting for social justice and continuing to be a positive collaborator in their academic life. As school counselors, the ethical standards guide the work we do to protect children’s welfare and make the most appropriate decisions for the students.

Vision statement: As school counselors, we adapt to the needs of all children and empower them to learn all they can lifelong. As well as advocating for social justice and for ALL students to be given the opportunity to be successful while also ensuring all students have what they need to achieve their dreams.

Completing the School Counselor Competency Assessment helped me understand where I am with establishing current skills, attitudes, and knowledge. I felt like I was very confident when describing and understanding the mindsets. Having the mindsets and professional beliefs of a counselor like a belief that each child can succeed and all students should have access and opportunity to a high-quality education is the foundation for all school counselors (ASCA, 2019). I believe some areas that I need to learn more about and develop the skills associated with include demonstrating leadership through the development and implementation of the school counseling program. I believe this will happen when I am confident in the school counseling program itself and am able to see myself as more of an expert on successful school counseling programs as they relate to the school they are serving. The mindsets, professional attitudes, and some knowledge I felt confident in. Some skills that involved developing and implementing programs I felt less confident with but will develop over time as I gain experience within the position. Developing annual student outcome goals based on student data as well as implementing action plans aligned with annual student outcome goals and student data will also come with field experience and time within the role of a school counselor. Lastly, establishing and convening with an advisory council for the school counseling program would come with time and authority within the school I work at and serve. I believe that these meetings would serve as a representation of the stakeholders involved in meeting goals within the school counseling program. This competency assessment allowed me to gain insight into things that I am understanding and other things that are still in the works.
