Asher uses art to express his model of the world and feelings. This is how he articulates how he sees the world to the world. His father continues to squish Asher's feelings with his personal opinions. "Sometimes feelings are dangerous.

Asher's mother, Rivkeh, enjoys his drawings but wishes everything he paints to be, "pretty." This frustrates Asher as he sees art as an expressive form of viewing life. Not everything in life is going to be pretty.

Early on in his life, he draws the Rebbe trying to hurt him in his Siddur. "You defiled a holy book!"

Asher's desire to paint brings up an argument with his parents regarding the 'nude' paintings. His family views these 'naked' pictures as distasteful whereas he sees a big difference between 'naked' and 'nude.' "A naked woman is just a woman with no clothes on. A nude is an artists personal vision of a body with no clothes on." Like most of Asher's arguments with his family, it becomes an intellectual and spiritual disagreement

The final stasis is broken when Asher's "Brooklyn Crucifixion" is displayed at the Art Exhibit. The blasphemous artist he became.  Although the art show was a great, 'success' for his career as an artist, his personal life shattered. He was ask to leave the synagogue. The Rebbe even asked him to leave Brooklyn. His family dynamic will never be the same.
