You were requested to have a job or else you get arrested for it. Everyday was very different depending on you age and where you live. There government belief was Communism. Besides that the east had more sense of community with the people.

Even if my family or friends were on the other side I would not want to risk dying. Theres too many traps and watch towers to where I would bound to be caught.
