My grandma Mary told me back in her day, talking to friends was a task and required some patience. Wih the Rotary phone, you would just pick it up and a live operator would answer, and you would say something like “Rockdale 582, please” and they would connect you to phone #582 over in the Rockdale neighborhood. If you wanted to call someone outside your immediate local area, you had to ask for a long distance call, and wait while the operators would arrange a daisy-chain of connections. This is very different to the smartphone that i currently use now.

I graduated in 2021 and i feel as though my graduation class was the last class to use paper and pencil every day to complete assignments. My cousin ( lilianna) who is currently in the first grade shared with me she does the majority of her work with the help of technology. This shocked me a bit because when i was her age, Technology wasn't so available as it is today.

Growing up My family especially my sister and I used a cordless phone with a answering machine connected to it. we would remember telling my friends to call us at a certain time so i could have access to the phone along with remembering numbers. When speaking to my cousin (6 years old) about this phone and showing it to her she compared it to the smart phone she currently uses and we talked about if she remembers phone numbers and did not shock me as she said no. The smartphone has made storing contacts so effective.

When I was in school, we did not have access to laptops so freely. It was a period of time on Fridays where as a class we went to the computer lab. When we were there the librarian would teach us how to code or type proficiently. We were not allowed to surf the internet and were restricted on many websites.

As I entered Highschool, The use of chromebooks were implemented into our curriculum. We were only allowed to use them for the class they were stationed in along with being returned at the end of class. my cousin shared with me that she uses these chromebooks very often and is allowed to take it home. My mother ( 42) on the contrary would be surprised because when she was younger in school she would watch videos on tapes and slide projectors

As i started my college courses i found one of my courses was ipad compatible and this made me excited. As someone who grew up with paper and pencil, having an ipad was new for me. I quickly learned how to take notes and organize information effectful. I still prefer to handwrite my notes..

I interviewed four people: my grandma, my mother, my sister , and my cousin. In each interview I learned about something different. For instance when i spoke to my grandma she told me as a child she did her learning with only pencil and paper. No computers were used and they were barely using whiteboards. My mother told me she would watch educational programs as a VCR. There was also language labs were they could learn with headphones. Through these interviews i learned there are so many ways to become educated. Technology has changed for easier access and convenience.
