Myth: Gifted is Elitist

Truth: Gifted education is not about status, it is about meeting student needs. Advanced learners are found in all cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and socioeconomic groups. However, not every school district offers services for gifted students, even though there are gifted students in every district. Because of a lack of state and federal financial support, only affluent districts in many states can afford to offer gifted education programs and services, which leaves many gifted students behind.

Gifted children will always do well in school.

Truth: Gifted children have many different relationships with school. Some kids prioritize their grades and excel. Others lack motivation because the school material bores them, or they become distracted by more engaging pursuits. Still other students wish to do well, but their fears about failure sabotage them.

Myth: This Child Can't be Gifted, He Has a Disability

True: Some gifted students also have learning disabilities. They are considered "twice -exceptional" students often go undetected in regular in regular classrooms because their disability and gifts mask on each other, making them appear "average".

#1 Discrimination: Students with fewer resources and different subcategories are being left out of testing from teachers who are being the "gate keepers". Students of color, females, ELL, and reduced lunch opportunities should not be left out from testing. When those kids were included, 3-5% total percentage rose.

Being gifted isn’t a free pass. . When certain concepts and ideas come fluidly, facing a challenge can be twice as difficult. Expecting the child to suddenly overcome such challenges is unrealistic and unfair.

One test can't measure a person's IQ. It takes a series of test to receive a reliable IQ test. An individual can be considered not gifted by a score of 129 even though they are very close to the 130 cutoff mark.

The Bright Child vs. The Gifted Child

A bright child enjoys peers while a gifted child prefers the company of adults. Since gifted children think a high level they may believe there peers are too childish. Hence, enjoying the company of adults whom may challenge them more intellectual.

Never ignore a student who repeatedly states that they are constantly Bored, that may be a signed that they need to be tested for gifted. Give them a chance and let the test determine if they are gifted or just overly bright.

The 0.1% IQ measurement, refers to the top 0.1% of scores on an IQ test. This means that only 1 in 1,000 people score this high. WOW! That's intellegence!

Sometimes they are left out of AP courses instead of being given the accommodations to make it easier for them to learn.

The myth is that they are mature, when they are really intelligent and can have social/ emotion issues.
