What is the purpose of an Advent Calendar?

Typically, the moveable parts are marked with the numbers 1 to 24, representing the days in December before Christmas. The purpose of an advent calendar is to move, remove or sometimes add a piece each day to visually gauge our progress toward Christmas Day.

Many people who aren't Christians also look ahead to Christmas by having an Advent calendar, but it might not have the same religious importance. Some Advent calendars might have a treat behind the door like a picture, or a chocolate.

Our Advent Calendar is a bit special. The treats it contains behind its doors are some challenges for you to learn all about podcasting in a nutshell.

To Do List

Each day you will have to read, listen to a video clip or to a podcast from the corresponding door in the Advent Calendar.

Upload the audio file in the column of the day.

Write a five-star comment on at least 3 different posted files.

Make a copy of the Advent Calendar Worksheet below to keep track of your work and progress.

Let's celebrate Advent time!

The difference between a radio and a podcast is like :

The radio can't stop , it's classic and if you don't like what you are listening to , good luck ! , you will have to wait for the next programme.

But in a podcast , you can find a lot of podcasts . A podcast welcomes you to react with a like or with an emoji , and if you don't like what you are listening to , you can skip or pause or watch another episode. And another difference is : At the radio you can't change or edit , but in a podcast yes , you can record their episode or put subtitles.

In today´s episode we are talking about a banana who hates Christmas ( like the grinch ) because in the past Santa left it on the plate and didn't use it, but the spirit of Christmas, Kevin, came to help you see it differently and the banana began to see Christmas differently He realizes all the bad things he has caused and starts helping people and being a Christmas spirit like Kevin. the moral? To be happy, you must be kind. Because I think Christmas is that, helping and accompanying everyone, enjoying with the people you love and those who are alone too.

Babbo Natale in Italy

Babbo Natale is Italy’s beloved version of Santa Claus. The jolly fellow has become very popular as gift giving on Christmas day has become an increasing popular way to celebrate the day, especially for children. La Befana, the old woman who delivers gifts on Epiphany, January 6 is still the more popular Italian Christmas figure, but Babbo Natale, is closing in quickly.

The Italian version of Santa Claus represents an aspect of Italy’s healthier life-style than the U.S. version. Babbo Natale is thinner and a more regal looking version of Santa Claus. Both wear red cloaks with white trim, although originally, Babbo Natale wore green and Santa Claus has had most decidedly more cookies.

TASK

In this episode, you'll tell your listeners all about the Italian Babbo Natale and compare him to the well-known Father Christmas (Santa Claus). This time, you'll need to use Audacity to include some music in your podcast and show us how you're using the fade in and out effect.

In Argentina, a popular New Year's tradition is to wear pink underwear. According to custom, ringing in the New Year with pink underwear attracts good luck, love and happiness in the coming New Year. Furthermore, it is very common for your relatives to also give it to you, like my grandmother who once gave it to me. Custom says that what you want will attract more. I like this tradition for New Year's because if you don't believe in luck, nothing happens, the important thing is that you have a good time with your family and have fun, like I did before I came here to Spain.

Happy New Year 2025!

Ignacio

Day 16

Ignacio - Hi everyone! I am your host Ignacio and this afternoon, night or day, and wherever you are looking at me, in The Wandering Traveller we will have an interview with a Dervish. If you like travelling, the rich culture of the countries, and a crazy host who likes to tell anecdotes about his trips, this is your place! So, without further ado, let's get started!

Ignacio - Hi Marco, so tell me, what do you do?

Aurora - Hi everyone, well, how can I say that? I dance a special dance: The Sufis.

Ignacio - And what is that? Explain to me.

Aurora - Well, Sufi dance, also known as the "dance of the whirling dervishes," can be described as a type of spiritual dance in which people spin around themselves. As they spin, they seek to enter a special state of concentration and connection with the divine. The repetitive movement helps them forget about the worries of the world and feel their spirit lifted, drawing closer to God. It's like a type of meditation in movement.

Ignacio - Oh, it sounds interesting!

Aurora - Yes, did you know that when we dance, we want to show a visual representation of the rotating cosmos and the cyclical nature of creation, and the eternal dance of the universe itself?

Ignacio - Are you kidding? Haha, it's just spectacular, this dance!

Aurora - Thank you! This dance isn’t for a performance; a lot of people say that, but then when I tell them what it really is, they can’t believe it.

Ignacio - It’s very important to know that, guys. Last but not least, do you want to say something else?

Aurora - We are alive, so we have to celebrate life and love. Thank you for having me, Ignacio.

Ignacio - Thanks to you! That’s all, guys. See you in the next episode.

Aurora - Subscribe today to my podcast The Wandering Traveller, so you’ll never miss a post.

Aurora - Explore, dream, live: the adventure begins here!

In Argentina a popular Christmas tradition is that before the Christmas celebration, on Christmas Eve, the people go with their family and friends to the church to celebrate the mass. We also play Chris Kindle, it's a very funny game. A typical poem is:

Llegó la navidad

Llegó la navidad,

vamos a soñar

con un mundo mejor,

con un mundo de paz.

En el campo y la ciudad

llegó la navidad,

que nos llena el alma

de felicidad.

Wish you the best Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025!

The best steps to speak fluently on a podcast are:

1. Read your script several times

2. Practice the entire script but especially the words that are difficult for you to pronounce

3. For words that are difficult to pronounce, you can put the way it is pronounced in parentheses next to it (like ball, which is pronounced bôl).

4. And lastly and very important, understand the meaning and use the appropriate tone of voice when reading aloud.

1-Do not read the script directly: Prepare before recording and avoid reading the script literally, so as not to sound robotic or artificial.

2-Adapt the script to be heard, not read: Review and adjust the script to make it more understandable to the ear, eliminating complex or long phrases that work better when read than heard.

3-Mark your script for better interpretation: Add annotations such as pauses, emphasized words, and speed rhythms to the text to aid reading fluency.

4-Practice pronunciation: Check and practice the pronunciation of complicated or unknown words, writing them phonetically if necessary, to avoid errors during recording.
