Looking Into Different Symphonies and Music

There are about 1,200 symphonies total in the US. A lot of them are similar with the specific music they play, but some are unique and play more modern or even just different music. One example I used was The Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Located in downtown Dallas, the symphony is conducted by Jaap Van Zweden. One of the events that is taking place today is Hilary Hahn, a famous violinist, performing Shostakovich Symphony No.1. The New Yorker described Hilary Hahn as "one of the most creative and unpredictable virtuosos." The symphony also plays traditional pieces like the upcoming event on September 28. Jaap Van Zweeden is conducting Beethoven's Emperor Concerto which includes Beethoven's Piano concerto No.5 "emperor" and Beethoven's No.3 symphony "Eroica." These pieces are most definitely just a few of Beethoven's best works. "Eroica" was a groundbreaking piece that was originally dedicated towards Napoleon (until he became emperor and Beethoven became furious). This piece was different from his other works because it displayed so much emotion from the composer. The other piece, the Fifth Symphony, is known as one of the best known pieces in classical music. It's well known intro is common to most and was a groundbreaking moment in classical music.
The other Symphony is the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra. This particular Symphony is pretty similar to The Dallas Symphony. There are however differences, not only do they have modern pieces and classical cannons, but they have premieres of some movies and also a lot of emerging talents in the classical music genre.

As we look at the two different Symphonies, both seem to play the canonic classical music. The Dallas Symphony seemed to play more "mature" pieces and have a more traditional feel to it (from having experience in being there). I would absolutely love to see a Beethoven piece inside the Dallas Symphony, specifically his fifth symphony, and hear that famous into that ive heard on you tube from my iPad.

I simply follow my own feelings."

-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

“Canons are always about closed communities – who is excluded is at least as important as who is included. It is the ‘in’ crowd that usually controls the entrances, which means that the canonized or canonical writers largely resemble those who have judged them to be ‘major’ or ‘important’ or ‘classic,’”

-Behrendt

"When we work to understand the social contexts from which great works of music arise, we can engage with it in a way that is both empowering and inclusive.
