It was marketed as “the temperance drink” in response to prohibition laws in Atlanta, allowing a social alternative to alcohol. 

It was sold in pharmacies for a nickel ($1.39 in 2021), making it affordable for consumers. It wasn’t bottled in factories until 1894, so you had to be in an urban environment to enjoy it.
