Think about the last time you saw a homeless man. Nearly 45 million Americans are facing poverty, creating an increase in homelessness each and every day.
In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, a major theme is poverty and how the protagonist and his family face financial problems.

This nonfiction book is composed of 4 chapters where multiple authors cover topics concerning poverty. These topics include poverty rates in America over recent years, government financial assistance programs, and different views on the solution to the financial crisis in America. By giving explicit details in multiple articles, the author(s) discuss poverty in a variety of ways. The book talks about homelessness and its affect on the country (pages 171-179). However, certain articles go into even more detail about how this is a problem not only in America, but across the globe. Some articles also go into depth on how to control levels of poverty in modern society by raising minimum wage in the work field (page 111) Because it is so difficult to obtain this, the economy worsens as more and more people face financial problems. Since this is such a controversial issue, not much has been done to help it, leaving nearly 45 million in the lower class. However, some critics do believe that we "are winning the war on poverty" (pages 72-75). This book is a part of a series (known as the Current Controversies series) of other nonfiction books about political, social and economic issues the world faces today.

Poverty is a major issue outside of the book. It affects society and is quite controversial in countries, especially in America, which has many government financial assistance programs such as Medicaid and Social Security (pages 56-58). Poverty is also portrayed in modern media such as in television shows like 2 Broke Girls or Shameless. Poverty is a major problem in third world countries like Haiti, which has a poverty rate of 77% (page 28). While it has decreased in America substantially since 1980 (page 72), this does not mean that poverty is not a major issue in other parts of the world. Homelessness, on the other hand, is still in need of a solution. The National Alliance to End Homelessness states that research shows supporting housing reduces the percentage of the homeless and lowers the cost of other resources (page 171). Even more research has shown that charities and churches have done more to address homeless than the federal government. Because of the amount of controversy on this topic, the government has not been able to fund any successful programs to make a difference on the issue. Therefore, poverty is a major issue in real life as is it stated in the book.

Similarities
In the fiction novel, Junior faces poverty on his reservation because his family can not get high paying jobs and his community is very poor. Because of this, his father must put his dog down because they can not bring him to the vet. This is also shown when the family questions whether Junior can attend public school because they may not be able to afford transportation.
This relates to the nonfiction book because the theme of poverty is in both. The nonfiction book goes into depth on poverty and its affect on the country and the rest of the world.

Differences
In the fiction novel, poverty is only portrayed in the protagonist's community, but in the nonfiction book, poverty is in multiple parts of the world, escpecially third world countries.
In the fiction novel, Junior at least has a home and his family has an income, and he even has the opportunity to get an education. Many of the articles in the nonfiction book talked about the homeless and their inability to obtain any of these luxuries.
