Self-image is very important. Feeling comfortable in your body will positively impact your entire day. The media can be very harmful to this because of how they portray beauty, "...research is increasingly clear that media does in
deed contribute and that exposure to and pressure exerted by media increase body dissatisfaction and disordered eating". As stated, many issues arise due to media. Be sure to understand that the media does not accurately portray what people look like, this will help you improve your self image. Another way to enhance self image is by surrounding yourself with people who bring positive messages, "When I am around people and things that support me and make me feel good, I will be less likely to base my self-esteem on the way my body looks". The book says to "respect our natural shape and learn to overpower those negative thoughts".

My friend has maintained a positive self image because she doesn't let what people say bother her (not that people say anything anyway). She understands that people on TV are not what every person should strive for.
