I chose Italy because of the beautiful Roman ruins and the culture they have. I appreciate the lifestyle they have where the middle of the day is very relaxed due to their time for resting. I am someone who enjoys waking up and working hard for a couple of hours, then take a small rest, and wake up and finish my day. The food is also something I enjoy very much and I think I could find a worthwhile job. Moving to a foreign country is not a simple process, and I will soon know the process for becoming a citizen of Italy.

There are different ways and circumstances for citizenship in Italy.

By residency: the most standard rule for citizens not from Europe is that you need 10 years of legal and continuous residence before applying for naturalization. If you are from Europe it is a shorter period of time, like 4 years instead of 10. Processing is typically slow and requires lots of ducoments.

By marriage: a spouse of an Italian citizen can apply after only 2 years of marriage if they are living in Italy. It is an extra year if the person is living abroad.

For both of these ways of becoming a citizen, you need to take the B1-level Italian language test. This test is however not required if you are applying by descent.

Other requirements that are checked include:

a clean criminal record

Proof of a stable income

Evidence of integration

Cost of living and housing:

The currency in Italy are euros (€). Monthly living costs for one person is €700-€1000. This is equal to about $816-$1165. Rent depends on the town you are in, just like everywhere else. It is higher in bigger cities and lower in smaller cities.

Healthcare and Education:

Italy has free or very cheap public healthcare for legal residents through what they call the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale. The quality is in most cases pretty high. Public education is also free in Italy. Some programs are offered in English, especially at the university level.

Cultural differences and challenges:

Some challenges that you might face are language and work culture. Being able to speak and understand Italian is almost always essential for daily life and most jobs. When working a job in Italy, it is important to remember they value respect and teamwork. They also emphasize a good work-life balance. Things may move a little slower than in the USA so it is important to be patient and flexible.

I think it would definitely take some time to adapt to life in Italy, as they speak a different language and things are pretty different in general in Europe. But that said, I think I would end up enjoying myself very much, as they have a beautiful culture and country. Something I would consider doing to prepare is learning how to speak Italian.
